...I sense their very short music careers are over. Back to reality for those 2 wanna-be pop stars.

Yeah I heard that he wasn't going to do anymore performing and stick to writing songs for other people - then he releases another single!

I think he announced this last week upon realising that his single would be a flop. As if he isn't bothered about single sales ! Yeah right.

With Phixxx only getting to Number 10 on the chart I can see them being dropped if their next single doesnt break the top 5. And I think Holly Valance will not be around in 6 months time as she charted outside of the top 5.

Why is top 5 so important? it still represents such a few few sales, and must be a loss leader for the record companies.

Surely album sales are more important. I don't think DS album did very well, THAT's why he's quitting singing, not his single's sales (or lack thereof)

Singles are loss leaders for record companies. But a sucesssful single will get loads of airplay (they make money from this via the PRS). If it gets loads of airplay more people will pop out and buy the album (record companies still make a nice profit on album sales) . Additionally a single is usefull in gageing the popularity of an artist.

For a pop act who record companies invest huge amounts of money had better make it big quick or they get dropped. They really do expect a quick return on their investment.

Mark Owen didn't do that well either (No.28?)

Getting in the Top 10 is still pretty good, it splits a flop from a hit without a doubt!

This weekend Marsh dropped to 64 and Sneddon to 67. Phixxx also dropped down a bit too. I thought that the public had had enough and maybe the UK was going to have a revival of proper music in the charts, but my joy was spoilt when Blazin Squad went in a number 2 yesterday.

Number 2 - how ironic !

Mark's single didn't get much airplay. DJ's only play what's on their list - regardless of what we want to hear.

I've got Mark's album and wouldn't have actually picked that as a single, there are better ones, no good having a "grower" as a single really, it needs to be catchy. Still, at least he writes his own and it wasn't just another cover. It only seems to be pop acts doing cover versions that fill most of the Top 10 anyway, so is it really what people are actually listening to?

I don't really buy singles, so I guess its teenagers that do.
