A total no brainer, I did consider D40 as well cos my budget was around 250 but eventually I went for Canon 1000D because it has Image stabliser and has internal cleaning sensor plus its compatible with all Canon lens.

The D40 is compatible with virtually every lens manufactured by Nikon since 1959.....

But you'll only get auto focus with the AF-S and AF-I lenses.

D40 & D60 don't have AF motors in the camera.

I'd recommend getting the D40 with the 18-55mm Vibration reduction lens which gives you about four more stops in bad light....it makes a lot of difference to image definition.

Not sure how much more it would cost though I suspect about 40 quid.

Just stating the fact that Nikon lens are just as compatible with the D40 and D60 as Canon lens are with current Canon DSLRs, as so many on here seem to imply Canon are the only manufacturer who have a wide range of compatible lens.

True, but that applies to virtually every Nikon autofofus lens manufactured since the mid-80s.
