took my Toshiba Laptop back and got a refund, any experts on here with Laptops?

Got my new Laptop yesterday, the Toshiba Satellite A300-10M with the 15" screen and i took it back today!!!
i tried everything, some of you may laugh but after restoring it to the Factory State 3 times, Windows Vista still took 8 minutes to shut down and start up on this machine, it would load up with the windows scrolly thing going left to right, then before it says WELCOME it would say "Please Wait" then it would pause for about 5 - 6 minutes! then it says welcome and up comes your desktop as normal, no problems at all once the machine had fully loaded...
im confused as to why is was so slow because it has 4GB of Ram and an Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5800 and running Windows Vista Home Premium....
my sisters HP G70-111EM Laptop starts and shuts down in 90 seconds!
it only has 3GB of Ram and exctly the same speed processor

any experts have any idea why?
im gutted because the Toshiba had AMAZING speakers and sound, the HP is still good but no where in the same league as the Toshiba for Sound Quality, though it does have a 17" screen, so swings and roundabouts i suppose?
i removed all the garbage from each of the above machines, stuff that i wouldnt use, i even removed stuff from loading at startup using MS CONFIG

i phoned Toshiba and the guy on the phone said that Vista on different machines can differ in loading and shutting down times, i thought really? not 8 bloody minutes surely!! ended up having an Argument with him! he obviously doesnt have a clue or he was trying to make me sound stupid!

Staples have ordered me one of the HP G70-111EM`s and are sending the TOSHIBA back as FAULTY because on looking at the event viewer, the page was full of Errors and boot diagnostic messages saying WARNING, ERROR etc etc etc, thank christ i know the Manager as i bet i would have got grief if i had bought it from Currys or Comet

if anyone else here has a Toshiba Satellite machine, can you see how long yours takes to shut down and re-boot?

i would be grateful to know IF it was my machine, wasnt prepared to risk getting an exact model and it still taking 8 minutes again!

if you really liked the Toshiba maybe you could ask for a replacement of the same but first trying it out in the shop to make sure it's running okay before taking it home?

i agree on that spec it should be more than adequate to run Vista Premium, 8 minutes is definitely not right. Sounds like maybe some bloatware is responsible during the boot up and shut down process? Did it have something crappy like Norton preinstalled?

Possibly just the Windows update running.

New laptops have a backlog of updates due. Would correct itself when complete.
Also if the wifi is turned on and there is a signal somewhere nearby a few 'jam' starting up with it waiting for an OK from the wireless router

Norton would not cause the system to run as slow as to take 8 minutes to power down.

Was there any utilities in the BIOS to check the Hard drive? - it may have been faulty.

when i first bought the laptop, it took ages to set it up as it normally does, then after that i updated it with ALL the updates etc, i removed MCAFEE from it and all the other garbage that i didnt need

it made no difference on when i first bought the machine to when i had fully updated it and removed stuff, was still slow on both attempts

it might have been worth testing another Toshiba A300-10M in the shop, waynester, if you really liked that laptop.

it might be that you got a duff one that somehow slipped through quality control.

Thanks mate, i could have done, though im not sure you can just ask for it to be unopened and then sit there for 25 minutes while it sets it all up, i would have to go through all that just to see IF it loads faster, lol
i did like the Laptop, had amazing speakers etc
but wanted something fast

i may just order this instead, better spec etc

i think HP are probably more reliable than Toshiba, though im not entirely sure

i currently have an old Satellite... the only thing i would recommend about Toshiba is that the build quality is quite good. I spilled coffee on it once and it only needed the keyboard replacing, the liquid didn't penetrate any further than that.

Personally i want a decent HP as my next laptop, they do have a good reputation. My sister got one recently... the only thing i learned from her purchase is that HP do not provide a recovery disc (you are prompted to create your own), and also they don't even provide a manual - you have to download a pdf Which i am not too keen on, as i like to have a manual to leaf through. You do however get a warranty booklet which is very thick because it is in umpteen languages. However it is a well regarded brand.

I bought a brand new Acer laptop a few weeks ago and just did a recovery disc and reinstalled it to take all the crap off it. It is now running sweet as a nut.

I think it might be a thing that Toshiba does to Vista (possibly with the preinstalled crap?), as my Toshiba (with the crap on) takes around 5 minutes to load and hangs on the "please wait" screen at boot up.

Solution; I bunged XP on and have no more such performance problems. Boot up in around 30s.

Well I have had my Toshiba P200 1EE for 10 months now and its a very sturdy machine,I have it set for dual boot and have noticed lately that Vista is quicker at starting up and getting on the net at least 50% faster than XP.Although they both shut down as quick as one another

It's a recent virus that's rapidly spreading across the DS forum

It emerged a few days ago with two 12 year old threads being dragged up
