My daughter has decided she really wants one of these phones. She will be on pay as you go and not using the internet or emails. Would this phone work on Vodafone?

Or this one

Not sure what it means when it says it only supports GSM 850/1800/1900

It means it's an American phone and will only partially work on Vodafone.

850/1800/1900 are the frequencies the phone works on. In this country, we use 900/1800 (plus 2100 for the new 3G networks). Vodafone's normal network is partly on 900 and partly on 1800. You may get a signal on the US phone thanks to its 1800MHz support, but coverage won't be anywhere near as steady as with a British phone. Avoid.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. Am I right in thinking that sidekicks aren't available over here anymore?

Remember also that the Sidekick is quite a limited phone. Would be much better to go with a UK phone with a QWERTY keypad.

I wish she would choose something else but she has wanted a sidekick for ages. I'll take her to look at phones

Tell her to look at a T-Mobile G1. Form factor wise it's aimed at the sidekick market.

Ok. Thanks for that. I'll take her to look at that one. Any others you could suggest?

If she has set her heart on the sidekick then ask in your local t-mobile shop. There are a few still laying around in safes. I know ive got a couple in my shop. They arent available on pay as you go though.
