Probably a silly question but are phones from an Orange shop locked? Friend wants a purple Viewty but they are only available on Orange and I can't find one sim free

Yes they will almost certainly be locked.

Indeed they are.

Yes - locked, branded and bloody buggy! Once free or Orange firmware, phones are ready to rock and roll.

You could always look into getting the phone unlocked. Shouldn't be too expensive and if your friend really wants the phone that badly this would be the only option, unless of course they transfer to Orange and keep their number.

It depends.

I took an N95 8gb out on an Orange contract and it was unlocked with generic software - that was from JAG Communication.

I agree. The handset will almost certainly be locked to the Orange network. There is always the possibility of getting the handset unlocked. But before doing so, I'd recommend finding out if getting the handset unlocked by 'other means' not Orange, would affect the warranty of the handset.

I got a SE c902 on contract and it was locked to Orange.

I lost it so got them to send me another one on the insurance and it isn't locked.
