Panasonic pg50, Grey import or not
mandlebrot

How can I tell if a Panasonic PG50 is a grey import or a UK retail version?

I ask because I have had 3 sets which all had the same sound fault (high pitch whistle in all simulated surround modes).

My local Panasonic centre suggested I might be having problems due to the sets being grey imports not intended for the UK and therefore not up to standard. He said the only way to tell was that 2 digits of the serial no: were different on UK sets but wouldn't tell me which digits to look for and what they meant.

I have a sneaky feeling he was bulling me so that I would purchase from him but would like to know any views on the subject.

Has anyone else experianced this sound problem with the Panasonic PG50 range?

Often the serial number has a few letters to start with, but it's not like UK or GB.. so probably would require you contacting Panasonic to check on this. Panasonic UK won't provide any service backup or guarantee service on grey imports. Their technical advice dept won't cover non UK models either.

I guess one way to check, is does the tuning menu have any other tuning features like 'BG PAL' (uk uses I PAL) and does it have Secam tuning options? Generally grey imports would be multistandard whereas the UK specific models are UK system i PAL only....

The UK model instruction book should only mention tuning inthe range of Ch21 to 69 PAL i.... if your TV or instruction book mentions more tuning ranges, then it might be an import. oh and the other thing, does it have a proper moulded 3 pins mains plug? Euro models would likely have a two pin plug... if your TV has a hand wired plug that might indicate something..
