There was someone on BBC Breakfast who explained why Bruce hasn't got a knighthood this year. Apparently he got a CBE three years ago and there is a five year rule during which people cannot get another honour. He has two years to go.

I didn't get one either.

I was wondering when he would get one as I think it is well overdue.

That really does seem to be a ridiculous rule.

Don't worry. If we start a petition now, maybe we can get you one for next year.

Well, at least it shows he isn't being ignored as such. They are just abiding by the rules.

I do wonder though whether that rule would be seen to be a barrier were it some high-ranking Civil Servant that we were talking about.

I don't think he deserves one.

So, on that basis, should Chris Hoy deserve one to add to his MBE (which he apparently received in the 2005 New Years Honours)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Hoy#Honours

And that does seem to blow a hole in that 5-year rule as mentioned in the first post.

I have this nagging feeling that Bruce must have said something really offensive about the royalty before (maybe during his generation games era), and the Queen might not really want to consider him among the kighthood list that way.

That said, he already had a CBE, and is paid VERY well for his job. Why does everyone say he 'deserves' a knighthood?

If you didn't join the official petiton to Downing Street this year, you won't have had the "Official" email back explaining that a petition would not be effective. They then went on to explain how to go about making a nomination, which involved filling in a form which could be downloaded or filled in from this site:

www.honours.gov.uk/nominate/forms.aspx

Of course you have to supply all the usual guff about why you think the person concerned should get the honour etc but in light of how many people actually signed the petition, if everyone filled in one of these forms then maybe the masses would get their opinions heard for once

I'm off to fill my form in - have fun people maybe Brucie will get his on the Queens Birthday honours instead.

Excuse me but Jonathan Ross has been offensive about the Royal family in the past and that didn't stop him getting an OBE

Okay, I was trying to find a justification for Bruce. Oh well, then they just really don't like him for some reasons.

I think it is a real shame he has been overlooked again.

Er.. no.. that doesn't happen with knighthoods. Being made Lord such and such and entering the House of Lords maybe, but not knighthoods.

I can't believe Chris Hoy, who is still very young, got one, but Bruce is technically past the average age of death and still isn't on there

I can't believe that Chris Hoy got one but Ben Ainslie didn't - his event takes a week, it's not like he can multi-medal at one Olympics ever.

But that's for another thread...

I think the fact that there is a campaign to get him a knighthood is upsetting the powers that be, you cannot have us ordinary folks having an opinion about these things you know.

In the big scheme of things Bruce has done nothing heroic to deserve one, but we are not looking at a big scheme of things, we are looking at a scheme that rewards pop stars, actors and entertainers who have their glory years behind them and who do not even live in the UK (Tom Jones, Julie Andrews, Roger Moore, Sean Connery etc), so compared to these knights, Bruce's award is long overdue.

The item on News 24 will probably be repeated occasionally during the day. I thought it was quite intreresting. It's worth tuning in for.

The speaker was explaining how some attempt was being made to try to inroduce some sort of consistency through the honours system.

He explained how each extra gold model a sportsman/woman won ranked them up by one level in the system. He compared Lewis Hamilton's MBE with Damian Hill's honour when he became World champion (which was not consistent), etc.

On the subject of BF, he also noted that there had been "internet campaigns" to get him a Knighthood, and said that the honours system was not driven by the demands of the internet.

Don't forget that Chris was a gold medalist in 2004 - and is still Olympic Champion at that event 'cos the Powers that Be in their wisdom cut his event from the shedule. Rather than sulk, Christ just got on with the job of being coming a champion in other discaplines too.

He is World Champion (and has been over the intervening years) and took 3 medals at one games, something not done for 100 or so years.

The cyclists don't just pop out of the cuboard every 4 years just for the Olympics. They are training and competing and winning all the time. Mark Cavendish - who seems to be forgotten because he was the only team member not to medal - had a fabulous year, breaking all sorts of records in the Tour de France, and Brad Wiggins only opted out the Tour this year to concentrate on the Olympics.

Chris has been a part of the Cycling Team since before the days the money kicked in. When there was no equipment and to get to the events in Belgium he had to pay for himself (and bike) to travel and when the bike wheels had to be shared.

<dismounts from hobby horse >

Having said that, I was disappointed for Ben Ainslie - I think he got the CBE?
