That's OK for you to hold a different view, and you can look up those questions yourself, mais non?

You've only got to Google Bruce Forsyth + charity and you'll see how often is name is associated with charities.

I can name three charities off the top of my head he's involved with -

Marie Curie Cancer Care
Variety Club's The Children's Charity (he is a supporter and past captain)
Children with Special Needs charity (he's still an active patron)
He's recently done The Really Naked Calendar raising funds for the National Osteoporosis Society (Craig did it too).

I would assume at his age he is now less able to give his time rather than donations, but over the years he has helped raise loads of money for charity.

I can, yes. But since you were so very keen to give us his entertainment pedigree, I confess to wondering why you weren't quite so forthcoming with his charitable one. Wink rightbackatcha.

I'm not in the least averse to Bruce getting a knighthood. But that's not a statement of support or intended to sound lukewarm, which I'm sure it does - I'm simply not a fan of the honours list generally.

Dear Dr Blockbuster,

Thank you very much for all this information, I will definately be coming over to see you,
please post some more messages when you have time, of any other Brucie stories, they are a delight to read, there are lots of Brucie fans here, who read but do not post messages, it can be quite a hostile place here at times. Thank you very much once again.

No problem. I'm no fan of the honours system, but I don't understand why others in the entertainment world have been knighted and Bruce hasn't - that's what bugs me.

I can understand that. If I were interested in this kind of thing, I'd probably feel that entertainment people would need to have done something out-of-the-ordinary with their fame with regard to charities - so Geldof with LiveAid, Elton John with AIDS, etc etc. I had no idea about Bruce, hence my asking - and since most of the posts on here had been about his service to light entertainment and rather vague on charitable stuff. I think his pay packet is his reward for services to light entertainment, frankly, and I think there have certainly been some mystifying elevations of late.

I guessed incorrectly that you were looking for a 5 or 10 minute argument. Schorry about that.

Thank you, but god there are so many online now. Ha!

I did another radio interview today with Peter Levy on BBC Radio Humberside - it went well.

The Scottie (The Scotsman) published a fine profile article yesterday and rather than print it here, this is the link to that article

Generally speaking, those in the what could be termed the 'variety/light entertainment' side of the business don't get honoured nearly as much as actors or even pop stars, and they get honours as a sop to be seen to be 'with it.'

Variety has always been rather looked down on by the establishment...ironic as the first Royal Command Show was a variety one, in 1912.

Irishman Bob Geldof OBE received an honorary knighthood at the young age of 35 for his charity work, Paul McCartney was knighted at 55, Cliff Richard OBE at 54, Mick Jagger at 59. Many more actors were famously knighted.

Eric Morecambe OBE died at age 58, Ernie Wise OBE at 74. Noel Coward, the exception, was knighted at the safely retired age of 71.

Could this be related to the lineage of variety in England harking back to music hall, not quite for the ruling class of the British Empire? Or is there something inherently uncomfortable when the world of variety and satire meets the world of titles?
