What effect does unlocking a phone have on your warranty?

none. all of the networks allow you to unlock a handset if you want to move to another provider and it has no effect on the warranty because it does not modify the phone in any major way

As far as im aware it invalidates your warranty unless done through the network.

Even then it may invalidate the manufacturers warranty as your removing it from original as sold specification.

That's correct, unless its the code from the manufacturer's database it invalidates your warranty. Testpoint unlocks, in particular, carry a risk.

Also, not all handsets can be officially unlocked.

That is the case with Tmobile (I used to work for them).

If you unlock it any other way you're on your own.
