I've had my Foxsat HDR for a few days now and there's one thing (so far!) that's really bugging me. According to the manual if I want to record the program I'm currently watching all I need to do is press the record button and the recording should stop at the scheduled program end time. As long as the part prior to me pressing the record button is in the buffer I would expect it to save the entire program from beginning to end (like Tivo does). What I actually get is the part from when I pressed the record button to wherever I manually stop the recording. Contrary to the manual it doesn't stop automatically at the scheduled end time. It also ignores anything in the buffer prior to the point at which I pressed record. I have emailed Humax and had a very quick response (within minutes!) from them telling me that I need to rewind to the beginning of the program and then press record. Then it will record the whole program. I've tried this but I get a prompt appear on the screen which says:

"TSR will stop and the channel will be recorded from the present time. Continue?” with Yes and No options. If I choose “No” then the message goes away and continues as it was before I pressed the record button (i.e. does nothing). If I choose “Yes” then it jumps to the live transmission and starts recording and ignoring anything in the buffer before the present time. The end result is exactly the same as if I hadn’t rewound and I’d just pressed the record button.

I have emailed Humax back with this information but as yet I haven't had any reply (not surprising considering it's New Year!).

Am I missing something or is there a problem with this feature?

I guess this facility on the HDR is similar in operation to the same on the Humax PVR9150/9200/9300 terrestrial recorders. You have to rewind the buffer to the point you want recording to start, before manually initiating recording. On the PVRs, pressing stop once then returns you to live, whilst recording continues.

Yes - I've read this on other posts. humax have provided an HDR without that, or similar, functionality.

Hopefully, humax sat will catch up with their terrestrial models - either as you describe, or my prefernce, as nvingo describes.

Thanks guys, I was hoping someone with a Foxsat HDR could confirm whether this feature had been implemented the way I think it has or not. I get the idea from the one reply I have had from Humax so far that it should work but I guess I'll just have to wait to see what their next answer is.

I'll let you know should I hear anything. In the meantime if there is anyone out there with a Foxsat HDR who could confirm whether this feature really does work or not I'd really like to know.

You can NOT record the live buffer on the HDR. Rewinding and then pressing record will pop up a message saying it will revert to LIVE viewing and record from there...

Yes, that's exactly what I'm getting but here's the reply I got from Humax support:


This would indicate to me that this feature is implemented on the Foxsat HDR. It appears that the Humax support person may have got confused with one of their other products.

Tivo has had this for years and I would regard this as a fundamental feature of a PVR.

Forget TiVo, the 9200T/9150T/9300T does it!

But then again, when the 9200T first came out - it did not have the Chase Play facility!! And only after a campaign by us, did Humax implement this... More people need to make this request this buffer recording feature to Humax and one day we might see this on the HDR.

I have had my unit since 29th Dec and mine too, does exactly this. This is very iritating especially when you have been use to SKY+ and this function works well on SKY+

I am at this moment creating a comments / critism list to send to HUMAX, documenting all the bugs and inconsistancies that are burried inside this 1st gen HDR unit - mostly all to do with recording and the EPG. I wonder if Bob_Cat would like to peruse 1st ?

Has a bug thread / wants list / fix list been started on this forum as I am new to this forum and just getting my bearings

However saying all this - I am well pleased with the quality of the picture - excellent on my Pioneer plasma - good work ...to the guys at HUMAX, we just need the finishing touches now to make this a brillant alternative to SKY+

I am having problems with my humax recorder. I press record when I want to record a programme the next day and then it says that the recording has failed for an unknown reason. I was watching the recording and then it just finished. Can anyone help please. I need to know what happened in the NCIS new series with the new crew.

The Foxsat-hdr is an out of production machine. Don't expect any extra capability. Any future software enhancements will be maintenance only. However the free custom firmware add on will transform the machine capabilities. There are good technical reasons why buffer record was never implemented. The timeshift buffer is recorded without encryption. It's not as simple as just copying the contents of the file to a recording file the existing contents would have to be encrypted before copying. This may be beyond the capability of the existing hardware. The second generation G2 Humax boxes do have buffer record and automatically record from the start of the current programme if it's in the buffer.

Set recordings from the epg using OK not record.

One of the quirks of of the Humax UI. Though to be fair, the same is true of the Digitalstream PVR. The Humax Youview box *does* use the Record button to set a recording from the EPG (using the OK button to set a Watch reminder).
