HDMI display format on Sony Bravia KDL-20S2020 through Sony RDR-GX350 DVD recorder
Hi,
I've been trying to adjust my current AV setup to make the use of the equipment I've got and ive nearly got it perfect, however there's one thing I'm wondering if I can adjust, which would make it just about perfect. The one thing I have left to try and figure out is if its at all possible to adjust the display format on the HDMI channel of a Sony Bravia KDL-20S2020(?) Basically when I play back any recorded footage on a recordable DVD disk, it shows up in 4/3 screen format and the cable box picture (the cable box is plugged by scart into my DVD recorder so their linked) also shows up on the HDMI channel in 4/3, when I'd prefer it on the wide (widescreen) setting, or at least so the picture is a bit bigger, say on the smart display setting or something. I mean it would look quite restrictive if I was watching a big action/drama show and only half of the TV screen is in use... I tried using the usual button which lets you change the screen (display) format when on the HDMI channel, only to see the message 'feature not available.' appear... I've also gone to the av2 channel which is the original channel that shows cable (where the other end of the cable box's scart lead is connected to on my TV) and changed the display format there, so its in widescreen there and then changed back to the HDMI channel but it still only shows as 4/3 on HDMI... Is there any way of getting it so that I can view the cable box on the HDMI channel and/or recorded footage from a recordable DVD disk on that channel on anything other than 4/3? I know its probably against the concept of HDMI to artificially stretch the picture but it just seems like its a bit of a shame if I can only watch back such footage on half of the screen size, especially as my TV is only 20"! even if the picture is slightly degraded, I'm not overly bothered but it would mean I could just keep it all plugged in the way it is, watch cable on that channel, record it to DVD and watch upscaled bought or rented DVDs all on that channel without having to continually switch between scart and HDMI connections, if I can just figure out if I can adjust the display format that would be everything sorted, so I hope it is possible, though im not sure(?) and I did check the manual both of my TV and of my DVD recorder, the TV manual mentions pretty much nothing about HDMI options, it pretty much just says to plug in a certified HDMI lead to where it says HDMI IN and then select HDMI channel, which obviously I already know, it doesn't mention any display options etc... and my DVD recorder mentions more about HDMI but it doesn't mention anything about adjusting display size/options from what I could see anyway... Anyone able to offer an easy to follow way of possibly fixing this? or is it just not at all possible? I'm just curious. Sorry this is a long message, I suck at condensing my messages I know and thanks alot for any responses either way

As far as I'm aware there's a setting on the DVD recorder under the HDMI menu that sets the screen format of the recorder.

(for anyone curious, its not under 'picture adjustment' under 'system menu' but rather 'Initial Setup' scroll down to 'HDMI Output' and set '4:3 Video Output' to 'Full') ![]() That was a real head scratcher for me for a while... I've unplugged my V box from the TV so its not on both av2 and HDMI channel at the same time now, which probably wasn't a good idea anyway, so this should be the best setup I guess the only downside is that I'll have to have my recorder on whenever I watch cable but its not so bad, the recorder isn't too noisy anyway. Thanks again
