converting vinyl to itunes /mp3 format
mimi dlc

Hi.
Just got my very first ipod and am managing quite well with it.
Up in attic I have a small box of vinyl LPs and I am trying to discover best way to transfer them to my ipod.
I haven't got a large vinyl collection cos i lost most in a house fire.
I do still have a old hifi with turntable.

Easiest thing would be to just buy the albums again on itunes, but obscure 70's prog-rock doesn't feature highly on itunes....
I did see a piece of hardware/software today for about £60 which could convert vinyl to mp3 format.Anyone used these?

I know there are companies who will do conversion for you...

Anyone know how much this might be per album?

Just use Audacity, a free sound recording program if you have the appropriate connections on your hifi and pc.

Thanks mark-b.

I'm afraid that looks a bit beyond me, too many choices of plugs and sockets.
May have to go down the professional transfer system

It's not that tricky to do using your existing hi-fi, but it is a bit time consuming (plus you do need to know a bit about inputs and your soundcard options etc).

Are none of these Prog albums available on CD via Amazon? That would be the cheapest option if you're only talking about a few albums.

I think that there is a gizmo that will transfer LPs straight to the i-pod without needing the computer (other than to name the files).

Ion turntable is the job for this and Iv'e seen a new one with an ipod dock which means no pc required. Just google it.

Plenty choice.

Be aware though that your problem will not be converting the disks, but the slog of inputting track names and album titles, so the real task will be to look for software that'll do this automatically.

Mimi,

If you get stuck, I offer a service for recording vinyl albums (and cassette tapes) onto CDs, which can then be imported into iTunes.

Drop me an email to grumsta at sky dot com if you're interested.

Normally £5 per album (it's time consuming) but I will discount for bulk. The Adobe Audition software I use can eliminate most pops, clicks and tape hiss without compromising sound quality.

Finally went up to attic and retrieved box of vinyl...
Memory plays tricks!

Much fewer than i expected, and TBH the majority are either embarrassingly pretentious or hideously 80s!
Most of the ones I was thinking were up there must have been in the now melted house fire collection!

Ended up deciding that there are at most 6 that I would be prepared to spend money on today... so I may just reinvest in those as CDs or downloads.

Thanks grumsta for your details.
I know that transfer is v time consuming and technical... somehow Thats what I Call Music 2 is so not worth it!
