Exclusive: I told Tommy Sheridan to speak with English accent in Celebrity BB, reveals wife Gail
Jan 5 2009 By Annie Brown
GAIL Sheridan has told how she warned husband Tommy to speak with an English accent on Celebrity Big Brother - so he could be understood.
But the former MSP ignored her advice - and immediately paid the price.
La Toya Jackson - sister of troubled superstar Michael - has already admitted she doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.
She even asked former weathergirl Ulrika Jonsson: "Do you understand him?"
Now the firebrand politician has been forced to "modify" his west of Scotland accent.
Yesterday, Gail told the Record how she and sister Gillian were hooked on the show - but confessed that she had to watch the opening night from behind a cushion.
She said: "That first night he went in, he had that big voice. I said to Gillian, 'Oh, my God, listen to that'. He is really loud.
"We told him he would need to anglify his voice, not just for LaToya, wee Verne and Coolio but the rest too.
"I think that's part of why he has been loud because he's doing that thing you do on holiday, shouting and pronouncing words slowly to make himself understood."
Gail said she was gripped by nerves on the night Tommy entered the Big Brother house - but the former MSP took it all in his stride.
Gail said: "Tommy was as cool as a cucumber. There wasn't a flicker from him but my heart was in my mouth. I was so nervous."
As a diehard BB fan, she knew that as a politician, he was bound to get booed and warned Tommy that it was inevitable.
She said: "That didn't bother me. Pretty much everyone gets booed.
"Tommy was totally prepared for all of that."
She believes Tommy's stints in prison for his protest activities will be a huge help to him.
And she said: "The difference is that this time, he's being imprisoned with celebrities instead of crooks and in a way you have to ask which lot you would rather be locked up with.
"I don't think confinement will bother Tommy too much. He'll keep busy with the gym and he likes talking.
"Some of them might not be as comfortable chatting all the time."
And unlike the rest of the celebrities, Tommy won't be floundering without the luxury of a private chef to cater to his every whim.
Air stewardess Gail said: "I can't cook and Tommy gets the same guff from me week in and week out.
"Nothing could be as bad as the food I give him but the fact that he has Coolio making all these amazing dishes, he'll be over the moon."
And she says he will have a higher tolerance when it comes to the constant gibbering of the women in the house.
Gail said: "He's been living with me all these years and I talk constantly.
My sister and my friends are always talking so he won't struggle with that.
"He's used to us nipping at him, so the whole thing will be a rest for him."
Gail celebrated her 45th birthday yesterday without her man.
She admitted: "It was a bit of a bummer not having him to go out and celebrate with but he left me a soppy card."
And she is convinced it won't be long before he is home, agreeing with the verdict of the bookies that he will be one of the first out.
She said: "He's not in it to win it. He didn't think in a month of Sundays he was every going to win it.
"He has already said he is anti-royalist, he's Scottish and socialist, so there is no way the English will vote for him."
The first nominations are in the hands of house leader Terry Christian, who likes Tommy, but Gail believes that still might not save him.
She added: "A lot of people are saying that Terry will keep him in because they get on but that would be too easy.
"Terry might think of getting rid of Tommy because he knows that eviction wouldn't bother him."
When it comes to the other celebrities, she can't see why they wouldn't like Tommy.
Gail went on: "The only thing you wouldn't like about Tommy is his politics, if you don't agree with them.
"The only other thing that might get on people's nerves is that he's so loud. But that's too bad, he's a Glaswegian man. He's certainly not offensive. He won't even swear. People might think he's a bit boring so get him out for that."
Gai l said she had spoken to George Galloway - another left-wing Scottish politician who went on Celebrity BB - about how he was "driven mad" in the house.
She revealed: "George told me that his plan was to go in and get his political message out there but that after three days, he was obsessing over biscuits.
"The man who had been fighting in the American senate was fighting over a HobNob a few months later. It can drive you crazy."
