Getting Started with I-tunes!
quacker
03-01-2009
As recommended from a few mates with Ipods, I downloaded I-tunes before I purchase (took me forever to decide which flavour I want).

I have put well over 6000 tracks on I-tunes, but now wondering what else I can do, how to find free downloads (if any) and generally how to use I-tunes.

It is very different to the drag-and-drop systems I have used with previous mp3 players.

Can anyone recommend a users guide, dummies guide to get me started? - I'm sure in time I will pick it up but at present it doesn't seem intuitive or user-friendly.

Firstly, FFS, it's iTunes + iPod.

Secondly, Google things. http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1367 for new users.

Good day.

FFS indeed. you always this helpful?

Why should it matter Ipod, ipod, i-pod, I-pod?

As for googling things, do you not think I already tried? - googling, sorry Googling, is ok to a point but nothing like speaking to people with experience of using something as opposed to company blurb etc.

Sorry to provoke your ire Matt. I'll try another forum where tolerance abounds.

In fairness though thanks for the link(s)

As an iPod user, I hate iTunes. Horrible. But it's the only way to enjoy my iPod touch unfortunately.

If you're considering a nano or Classic iPod, I'd recommend also considering a Zune, as I also have one of those and the software for it is superb.

As a main music library, iTunes isn't viable for me because it often trips up on metadata and refuses to load heaps of songs whose metadata it doesn't like. Fan bloody tastic.

Getting free music - well, there's the pirate route but there's also a wealth of music blogs out there. The Hype Machine is a good place to start

iTunes has its own free offers too, e.g. artist of the week

I've never had any issues with metadata and my iTunes library is over 600GB now. Then again I hardly ever have issues with my computers and software.

If you're Googling for information it matters greatly. Searching for "i-pod" and "i-tunes" is unlikley to result in many worthwhile links, however using the correct spelling will probably result in better search results.

I have never used any Apple software on my PC, not because i'm some PC fanboy but because I think that the Apple software I have used in the past is shite. That, and I also don't own an iPod so there is no benefit in using iTunes. It's easier to just plug my mp3 player in to my PC and drag the files into the folder myself.

FFS, don't suppose you've ever been unsure about anything, ever?

The biggest plus point for iTunes (for me) is it's support for the Airport Express. I don't know of any 3rd party libraries that will stream music to multiple rooms wirelessly at such a low cost. Admitedly, you can do it with multiple apps, but in iTunes it's seamless.

Also, look up smart playlists. They're very useful if you have a car interface that only allows access to the first 5 playlists on your iPod. For example, my top 5 playlists are set to include only the music (in 5 genres) I've listened to most in the last 6 months. It pretty much covers everything I'm "into" at any one time, without me ever having to choose in advance what I want to take.

I've never had any troubles "reading metadata".

How about an Archos160GB as an alternative to an ipod classic?

Read lots of good things about them. Does anyone own one?

FFS - this has to be one of the most childishly pedantic comments I've ever read on DS - and that's saying something.

I suppose I should congratulate you. Perhaps Ds (oops, sorry; DS) could institute some kind of "Curmudgeon of the Year Award" - with the "Victor Meldrew Trophy" awarded to the lucky winner?
