i was bought a tomtom one xl in september as due to redundancy i was starting a new job driving. it has been nothing but trouble,it sees to know when i am in a new unknown town or city and seems to lose signal almost every time. coming along the A46 towards coventry the other day it told me to turn left turn left, and looking on the screen i was driving through a large lake????
it is going back in next few days, its taken tomtom customer services a long time to acknowledge a problem, trying this and that along the way. through using forums i know i am not the only one . whereas garmin i believe are very reliable.
i wont touch tomtom again

I have used TomTom's for years, but this Christmas I bought a couple of Garmins as gifts and very impressed too.
Nuvi255WT comes with lifetime traffic updates.

Safety camera info can be subscribed from Pocket GPS world

I think it about £17

not sure

TomTom all the way for me, I've had one for ages now and it's very easy to use and I have had no problems whatsoever with it. I borrowed a friends Garmin before that and I hated it, it almost put me off buying a satnav altogether.

Hi Hoofy. There is another good make out there...... I have a NavMan S50 3D, at just under £100 it's a very good piece of kit. Safety Camera database, TMC traffic (optional). 3D POIs, etc... It may be worth you looking on here http://www.navman.com/in-car/europe/uk/. Hope that gives you some more ideas.

Piquet41

Sorry Hoofy, I see you have already owned a navman..... trust me, they have improved..

TomTom is superb. Never had any problems. Does what it says on the box. And these people do a nice line in manufacturer-refurbished units. Just like new, with 12 month warranty and latest map guarantee. http://www.totalpda.co.uk/

I would say TomTom as well, I do a thousand miles a week with my GO530 and it never lets me down, plus I can stream MP3s and Audiobooks through my car stereo and it has bluetooth hands free for the phone.

I use the pocketgpsworld speed camera database, it costs £17 per year with weekly updates, also if you spot a new camera and your the first to report it you get a free lifetime membership, I got mine in December for reporting a Gatso that had been removed.

Well worth the money.

I've had exactly the opposite experience to Eileen. I borrowed a TomTom on semi-permanent loan from a friend before ever owning my own satnav and the poor sensitivity to signals in built-up areas, the abysmal battery life (he forgot to lend me the cigarette lighter power cable to start with) and the counter-intuitive user-interface nearly put me off satnavs for life.

I bit the bullet and bought the equivalent Garmin StreetPilot satnav on the understanding that I could return it for a full refund if not completely satisfied and it totally blew me away with its 8 hour battery life per charge and incredible sensitivity. It's just as well really as I used to cover around 80,000 miles a year in my line of work and the TomTom nearly cost me my job more than once.

This all took place around two years ago and things may have changed since then, but that's my personal experience, and the Garmin still performs as well today as the day I bought it despite thousands of hours of heavy usage. I love it.

Cheers, Slipstreem.

well my tomtom came back today, yes you guessed it, they say there's nothing wrong with it. I told them the problem was intermittent but as it came back within one day they obviously didnt check it out fully.

guess who's looking for a garmin??

I had one of those with TomTom 7 on it, it was great until I dropped it and the screen smashed into a thousand pieces.
