SE W890i Opinions
Hi I am thinking of buying this phone as I noticed its in the sale at the T-mobile shop for £99.99 (when purchased with £10 top up).
Before purchasing this phone I would like to know peoples opinions and views on the phone? I have heard that the phone is plagued with the same SE faulty software bug that is also in the W910i and other recent SE handsets, is this true? Thanks in advance! |

My son as had it since August 2008 with NO problems with the software or keys at all and he gives it some hard use and knocks .
Music is a tad tinny from the speakers which for a walkman phone is not to hot , camera pictures are quite good for daytime shots in good light |

No, we have differences of opinion. Personally, I think the w890i is a terrible phone. Poor screen, tinny music, poor build-quality and buggy firmware. Its no wonder it's being sold off cheap.

My son is on the Three network , is that based on their own software version and hence the reason its not so "Buggy" ? £150 to £200 is not exactly been sold of cheap is it , possible more to do with the time its been up for sale and is maybe due to be replaced or deleted ? |

Ok , different opinions , they make the word go around , but if something is "quoted for truth" it suggests the other opinions are totally made up ?

I don't have any experience of the W890i, but I've been using the W880i for the last year, and can confirm that it's a brilliant little phone. The size is perfect, the buttons aren't anywhere near as bad as people say, and it has most of the features I need, and I haven't had any software problems with it.
Having had a K800i with faulty software in the past (I think it was more like a faulty memory chip or something that kept corrupting the software), I know it can be very flustrating, so you want to make sure that the W890i is free of software problems before you get it. T-Mobile's software is pretty good anyway, seems to run a little faster than the equivalent Orange software, and less branded than Vodafone's. As for the W880i's faults: 1. Tinny speaker. This isn't as bad as it appears, assuming you're not one of those annoying people who listen to music through their mobile phone's speakers. They have hifis for that sort of thing you know. However, this also means - 2. Very low video conferencing/handsfree speakerphone volume. You can hear it fine in a quiet room, but add a couple of kids or a TV in the background, and you've no chance. 3. Battery compartment is quite sensitive. If you bang the phone against the back of your hand, it goes off. If you drop it (you shouldn't really anyway), it goes off. 4. Video capture quality is very poor 5. MP3 player is a little buggy. You can't always get album covers to load for every album, and it's a lot more hassle than using iTunes. 6. Built-in sony ericsson web browser is very poor. I'm using Opera Mini which is much faster and shows websites as they are supposed to be. 7. No built in radio (this is fixed with the W890i) But really, it's a brilliant phone, and I'd highly recommend going for it's big brother, having read reviews stating that it's more of the same, just with different buttons. I would be upgrading to this when my contract comes to an end if it wasn't for the Google G1. The W880i was about £99 on PAYG until recently, so that's pretty good value for money if you ask me. |

1, 2, 4 and 6 also apply to the w890. As for it being £99, so is the w890 on tmobile.

Thanks for everyone's replies!!!
I think I may leave getting this phone but part of me just wants to try it. Seems a lot of money to pay for something that is not 100%!!! |

No it doesn't. The back of the W880 is plastic and flexible but the w890 housing is tougher and almost metallic. If the same thing is happening to anyone with a w890 then it's more likely to be be something with that particular phone.
Quoted for truth , I agree with SI the two slide catches on the phone make it hard to accidentally fall off

On the whole I like mine. It satisfies my main requirement - something small. Having gone from T610->K750->K800, I was getting annoyed that SE seemed to be making their phones bigger and bigger.
There is a problem with the firmware (yes, I have the latest version) where the phone will spontaneously restart itself; I don't need to enter my SIM PIN or phonelock code when this happens so it's not like a full restart from cold. The camera is, frankly, rubbish having no flash or auto-focus but I can live with that. The W902 looks like an improvement in this respect but is slightly larger. Speaking of the camera, my Vodafone-branded model has a neat habit of erasing all the text if you accidentally press the camera button whilst typing it! It says it has saved it in Drafts, but it's an empty message. My wife has an unbranded model on O2 and it doesn't do this. Thanks Voda. At least hers also restarts itself, more than mine in fact, so she isn't missing out on all the 'fun'! Other annoyances not already mentioned by others: 1) You can't look through an individual folder of photos as a slideshow as per the K800. The media player makes a slideshow of every picture it can find, even those not in the camera album or pictures folders. 2) The Walkman button on the left hand side - IMO this would be better as a play/pause button like the K800. If music is playing then once the keylock has kicked in, you have to unlock the keypad before you can pause/stop it. I did, however, discover that you can skip tracks by holding either the volume up or down button on the right hand side; up is back, down is forwards which feels wrong to me, but never mind. I've not found a way to stop the music though. |

I'm having mixed views now about whether to go for this or not due to the negativity surrounding it. However, everyone has moans about every phone available so I doubt I'm gonna find ppl not slagging off a phone!
