In simple terms, it means their tracks are now protection free .... so you can move them around, play them on devices other than an iPod and generally do what you will with them.

But any tracks you've already bought are still protected. You need to pay 20p per track to "upgrade" (lol) them .... ie. get an alternate version that isn't protected. (Oh ... and as you may have gathered from the thread so far, you have to do your entire library ..... you can't just upgrade selected tracks, you have to do them all .... which is a nonsense and just an excuse to fleece the consumer as far as I can see)

Doesn't affect stuff you've ripped yourself or aquired elsewhere, just stuff bought from the iTunes store.

This has much less to do with Apple changing its mind and far more to do with the opening of Amazon Mp3 store IMO.

Apple could have done this much earlier than it did. It suited them not to.
Err, no they couldn't. It was down to the 'big 4' music studios to allow DRM free, and they delayed doing so in order to give unfair advantage to other online services in an attempt to remove Apple from #1 spot (USA).

Which as been a horrible failure. While most other stores have had DRM free music iTunes have gone from 4th top selling to 1st top seller of music in the US, now sell over a billion songs a quarter and have gained market share.

This all suggests to me that many consumer are actually not bothered by DRM so much but prefer the ease of use experience iTunes / iPod provides.

I'm going to add to that...

AAC is a newer and more efficient encoder which offers higher sound quality at lower files sizes than what the same bit rate in MP3 would. I wouldn't be too worried about this though unless space is an issue and compatibility isn't. I'm personally a 320kbps MP3 person, superb sound quality.

A hell of a lot of difference. 128kbps sounds like mush when played on decent equipment.

You won't be able to tell any difference using those. When I say decent equipment, I'm talking about proper hi-fi seperates.

Which earphones are you talking about? If it's the white ones supplied with the iPods, then probably not no, as they are not very good quality. If you swapped these out with a decent pair of headphones, however, the difference between 128 and 256 would be obvious.

No.
You have to pay an extra 20p to update each one.
But you can only do ALL of them. You can't cherry pick the songs you want to update which I think is a bad move.
They get 20p to downgrade something???

No thanks... i will do fine with DRM

Downgrade? How is it downgrading? Essentially the record company and hopefully the artists are getting a little extra for the privelige of DRM free music. DRM is evil! I just hope they eventually offer this track by track. I can't afford to do it in one go.

EDIT: By downgrade do you mean remove DRM and upping the quality?

Sorry to dig this one up again but the iTunes store now offers the DRM free updates on a per song basis rather than your whole purchased library in one go.

20p per song if you really feel the need.

Also to add, the prices will be changing.

Some songs will be 59p, some 79p and some as high as 99p.

This move is to battle the prices at Amazon and Play.com
