Pretend for a second someone's been living under a rock ( with their ipod ) happily using Itunes to sync their music and videos pics and contacts , what would dumping DRM mean to such a luddite

![]() But any tracks you've already bought are still protected. You need to pay 20p per track to "upgrade" (lol) them .... ie. get an alternate version that isn't protected. (Oh ... and as you may have gathered from the thread so far, you have to do your entire library ..... you can't just upgrade selected tracks, you have to do them all .... which is a nonsense and just an excuse to fleece the consumer as far as I can see) Doesn't affect stuff you've ripped yourself or aquired elsewhere, just stuff bought from the iTunes store. |

This has much less to do with Apple changing its mind and far more to do with the opening of Amazon Mp3 store IMO.
Apple could have done this much earlier than it did. It suited them not to. |

Err, no they couldn't. It was down to the 'big 4' music studios to allow DRM free, and they delayed doing so in order to give unfair advantage to other online services in an attempt to remove Apple from #1 spot (USA).
This all suggests to me that many consumer are actually not bothered by DRM so much but prefer the ease of use experience iTunes / iPod provides. |

this is a genuine question.. is there really that much of a difference between 128 and 256 sound wise?

No they are in the better quality ACC format.
AAC is a newer and more efficient encoder which offers higher sound quality at lower files sizes than what the same bit rate in MP3 would. I wouldn't be too worried about this though unless space is an issue and compatibility isn't. I'm personally a 320kbps MP3 person, superb sound quality.

A hell of a lot of difference. 128kbps sounds like mush when played on decent equipment.

You won't be able to tell any difference using those. When I say decent equipment, I'm talking about proper hi-fi seperates.

Which earphones are you talking about? If it's the white ones supplied with the iPods, then no, as they are not very good quality. If you swapped these out with a decent pair of headphones, the difference between 128 and 256 would be obvious.

No.
You have to pay an extra 20p to update each one. But you can only do ALL of them. You can't cherry pick the songs you want to update which I think is a bad move. No thanks... i will do fine with DRM |

Sorry to dig this one up again but the iTunes store now offers the DRM free updates on a per song basis rather than your whole purchased library in one go.
20p per song if you really feel the need. |

Also to add, the prices will be changing.
Some songs will be 59p, some 79p and some as high as 99p. This move is to battle the prices at Amazon and Play.com |
