iphone - how is it connected to the internet
Please excuse my ignorance but I've just bought an iphone on pay-as-you-go, which comes with free 12 month internet access.
I can connect to the internet when I'm out and about, at home, at work etc.. but I don't know how it's doing this? Also I've noticed that when I'm at home and open up the Safari browser it detects my home wireless wi-fi router. If I use this to connect will it be quicker and also once my 12 months free period is up can I still use my wi-fi router to connect to the internet from free? |

The 12 months free access allows you to use the O2 mobile network and wifi over BT Openzone and The Cloud at not ectra cost. When at home, you can use your own wifi which will be quicker but be aware that it is the same as using you home computer so will eat into any download limits you may have as part of your home broadband package. (Switch to O2 Broadband which is unlimited!!).
Hope that helps! |

If you switch off Wireless in the settings and only switch it on when you want to use it then it won't automatically detect your wifi......That's how I use it....Hope that helps....

Also switching off WiFi and Bluetooth when you're not using them greatly increases battery life.

Switching off wifi to save battery isn't really worth it to be honest. The iPhone doesn't remain connected to wifi when the device is locked (unlike the cellular network which is always connected).
Say you're sitting at home in range of your wifi router with the phone in your pocket. It'll be consuming no power from wifi as it's not connected and it'll only connect when you unlock and use the device. Even then it'll only consume significant battery life when you actually use it to transfer data. |
