Failure to finalize disk on DMR-EH50
I tried finalizing a disk with 9 separate recordings on it, and it failed. The machine made a lot of grunting noises while trying to do it. I now have a disk that is playable on the machine but I can't finalize it and I can't dub the individual recordings back onto the HDD. They show as normal in Navi mode, but when I try to dub them I get a message saying "Insert a valid disk". I tried playing the disk in the DVD player of the computer, but it just rejected it, so it clearly isn't playable on other machines. Is there anything I can do to recover the individual recordings? I can watch them now, but if I ever had to change the machine (perhaps it's time to do that now) I wouldn't be able to watch them.

If you are able to watch the recordings then play them out to the input of another recorder and rescue them that way.

Thanks. Good idea - I didn't think of that. I just need to find someone who'll lend me one now!

The grunting noises at finalising mean you need to get inside your DVD drive and clean the rubber disc on the disc platform.
It is the disc slipping on this that causes the noise and loss of laser lock which makes the finalising fail. A disc with 9 separate recordings means a lot of disc 'housekeeping' procedures have to be performed which is challenging. |

From what I've been reading on other threads Panasonic charge around 80% of the cost of a new machine to supply or replace the DVD drive, not to mention the hassle of having to send the unit away or take it to some remote servicing depot. By pitching charges this high Panasonic don't want the repair business but the other manufacturers will doubtless impose similar repair charges. Your suggestion is very much appreciated, all fixed in 20 minutes at no cost. |

similar issue ( i posted this elsewhere, and then found this thread)
Panasonic DMR-EH50 HDD still works fine, but it wont burn disks (makes horrible head-crash type noises!) . Although it will play pre-recorded DVD's with no problems - Just burning thats the issues. I still use it. quoted £125+ for a replacement DVD drive - didn't bother, got a new Sony HDD Recorder, and now use both. a) is this the same issue b) is it easy to fix, or will i trash the machine? how do you clean the disk? thanks in advance |

followed this thread and some others - i actually had some print head flush that i got with a ink cartridge refill kit - website said its similar to alcohol but not flammable rubber seal didnt look TOO bad, but some stuff came off -------- anyway - it fixed the problem - burnt and finalised a disk with no problems, and drive really quiet thanks all. |

Thanks for this info, my Panasonic DMR-EX85 has been failing to finalize discs more and more frequently and making those 'grunting' noises. This fix has sorted it, the rubber seal wan't too bad but did have dust/fuzz on it but I also found a long hair wrapped around the spindle so that didn't help either.
