Recording HD onto DVD PVR Burner
I haven't tried this yet but wonder if it's a runner before I delve into the snake's nest of cables that lurk behind the TV etc.
I recorded a few things in HD over Chrimbo that I would like to keep without clogging up the HDD forever. Also my Brother wants a copy of them 'cos he missed them. I know I can't export HD progs from the Beeb via USB because of the encryption but could I connect via the Humax VCR-OUT (or RGB TV out) scart to my existing Freeview Sony DVD PVR and re-record them on there? I assume I would press play from the Humax and record via Line-in on the Sony then dubb from the Sony HDD to it's DVD as per normal. I know I wont be recording HD quality but I can live with that. My bro hasn't got an HD set anyway so he isn't bothered. I just want an off Humax copy (albeit SD quality) to keep or pass on. Any ideas please? (Apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere.. ) Last edited by kar999 : 08-01-2009 at 14:15. Reason: Footnote |

Thanks.
So will this overcome the encryption issues? Am I right in that you saying that I will need to use Composite and Audio rather than just scart to scart on RGB There are twin scart inputs (TV and VCR) both selectable as In or Out on my DVD PVR one of which is Video or RGB-In selectable. The other inputs are jacks/phonos for component or S-Video. The manual suggests connecting a Sat box using a Scart with input set to RGB. ... just a tad confused so please excuse me... |

Are you seriously saying that recordings from HD channels cannot be saved to dvd (in SD format) via rgb scart?
This is perfectly possible with similar recordings on sky+HD. If this is correct, why is it not possible? These recordings are FTA and you should be able to do this! |

It is part of the freesat spec apparently. They don't want FTA HD to be copied, even in an RGB SD format. I bet they felt like gods when they came up with that one.
![]() There is speculation that the BBC will relax this restriction for its own programmes (as opposed to films) in time, but that's all it is at the moment AFAIK. |

The Foxsat-HD has component output but you can't use it for HD (unlike an earlier Sky box) again it's crippled by the broadcaster ![]() There is a workaround for BBC HD though, using Non Freesat mode. If you switch to non freesat mode and switch off and then on again you can record BBC HD manually without any such restrictions. |

Ihave a dvd of each England footie match for years - the only reason to get freesat+HD would be for the better footie pq - if you can't record it onto dvd it is a total waste of space. |

Yep, it's total overkill. They are using changes in tech to try to redefine what consumers can do with fta material in a way that they previously couldn't.
The only bright spot in all this is that Apple ditched DRM for iTunes the other day, presumably because they realised the PITA factor was losing them sales. Once HD is the norm rather than the equivalent of the cat's whisker radio maybe they will back off a bit. But have no doubt there is a move on to reduce consumers' ability to retain 'free' content like never before. |

Going forward it sounds like, for now, I need to record in Non Freesat Mode anything that I might want to archive. |

So am I right it saying that, because I'm trying to transfer to my DVD PVR, something that is already recorded off a freesat broadcast then I'm stuffed?

Thanks Graham. I understand now.
![]() I think I'll keep on recording stuff I want to archive on my Standard DVD PVR for now then! |
