Knowing the BRITS

Breakthrough act - Adele :|
Best British Female - Adele :|
Best British Album - Coldplay Viva La Vida
Best British Group - Coldplay
British Single - Not a clue
International Breakthrough - The Script
International Album - The Script?
International Female - Britney Spears Or Katy Perry :| Or Rhianna
International Male - NeYo/ Chris Brown

I expect Duffy to be largely snubbed like Leona and Lily Allen were. Adele's debut was awful, but I think she'll pick up most of the female awards for some reason..

I'll be surprised if Duffy wins, she's just not popular with the Guardianista crowd.

A stupid question i know but who actually votes and decides who wins what Brit award? Is it British music critics in general?

Music week

Quote:
“Brit Awards chairman Ged Doherty says punters can look forward to one of the most representative awards to date when it returns to Earls Court in 2009. Since his appointment as Brits chairman last year, Doherty, together with the Brits board, has actively sought to improve the voting academy and he believes the fruits of their efforts will be evident in next year’s winners.

More than 1,000 people make up the voting academy, a carefully selected bunch of individuals from different sectors of the UK industry. They range from retail to the media; from music producers to the live business (see breakdown in graph, right). Doherty says he wants to dispel the myth that the awards are just a back-slapping exercise for the major record labels.

“Most consumers and artists think that the Brit awards are decided by the four major chairmen and a couple of henchmen and women, which is, of course, not true,” he says. “It’s always been the academy, but very few people are aware of that. It’s made up of over 1,000 voters and they come from various backgrounds.”

In recent years, the return on those 1,000 or so members of the voting academy has hovered around 70%, so in a bid to increase figures, the Brits board has actively monitored those people who did not vote, replacing them with new people in a bid to stimulate a more solid return.

“We’re determined to get it back up to 1,000 voters this year,” says Doherty. “Also with the make-up of the academy this year there is a far wider voting spectrum of people in terms of tastes than there has been before and I am confident that as a result of that it will offer a more balanced view. Some of the biggest-selling acts are ignored by the Brits, which I think is a mistake.”

Voting for the 2009 Brit Awards will commence on December 3. The voting academy has already been alerted to the date and is required to re-register for next year’s awards. The window to cast votes will close promptly at 3pm on December 10.

Doherty says that, voting aside, the award ceremony itself is shaping up very well. “The hype has started in the press already. I think we have a very strong line-up of artists you would expect to perform well. Duffy would do well, Kings Of Leon, The Killers, Pink, Coldplay. There are always surprises. Craig David was nominated for five Brits one year and didn’t receive one, you never quite know.”

Kings of Leon will easily clean up International Act and album. The Script are Irish so in theory would fall into international, but I dont think they have a chance.

Best male - well it's about time Will Young got some recognition but I doubt that will happen.

Best Female - my preference is for Adele, but Duffy will get this one I guess.

British Live Act - Muse (they played V in 2008 and seem to win this every year so probably will again)
British Male Solo Artist - James Morrison (Tom Jones will be nominated for this though, trust me)
British Female Solo Artist - Duffy
British Breakthrough Act - The Ting Tings
British Group - Take That
British Single - Take That - Greatest Day
British Album - Take That - The Circus
International Male Solo Artist - Ne-Yo or Jason Mraz (Brian Wilson will be nominated and should win, but he won't)
International Female Solo Artist - Beyonce
International Group - Kings of Leon
International Album - The Killers - Day & Age

Although this isn't who I think should win, it's who will. Take That's album was rubbish and Greatest Day was a crap song - if a new artist released that song it would flop, it was only because it was TT. However, this will happen, as much as I don't want it to.

British Album - Girls Aloud - Out Of Control
International Male Solo Artist - Kanye West
International Female Solo Artist - Britney Spears
International Group - Alphabeat
International Album - Britney Spears - Circus

I think.....
British Live Act - Coldplay
British Male Solo Artist - Dizzee Rascal
British Female Solo Artist - Duffy/Adele/Estelle
British Breakthrough Act - The Ting Tings
British Group - Coldplay
British Single - Take That - Greatest Day
British Album - Coldplay - Viva La Vida
International Male Solo Artist - Sam Sparro
International Female Solo Artist - Katy Perry/Rihanna
International Group - Kings Of Leon
International Album - Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night

It's been a really bad year for Male Solo Artists, but there's quite a few Females to chose from, both UK and International.

Coldplay are always popular at the Brits, so it seems silly to go for anyone else.

Well no album means no Best Female nom for Leona and no Best Male nom for Dizee Rascal

Looking at the full list I think the biggest things that jump out are - 3 nominations including BEST LIVE ACT for Scouting for Girls

and a complete snub for one of last years success story - The Script I appreciate that International is competitive but a real shame all the same.

Oh yes and despite releasing amillion singles Rihanna is not allowed a nomination either

The top 10 biggest selling british singles of 08 are automaticly nominated for best single, hence the x factor winners single ending up on the list every year, it never wins though.

Can't be that simple as Leona Lewis is nominated for Better in Time when run sold more. Also, not sure about Take That last year as didn't Rule the World outsell Shine?
