Subtitles
If this has already been spoken of, then please accept my humble apologies.
![]() I have for the last few years been using standard Digiboxes. One option on them which has really helped crush Belgian Cable access into the home has been the subtitles facility on the Digibox. Hit "Help" then "subtitles on" was really easy allowing my lady wife to fully understand the English. The HDR though is a pain to say the least. The only thing I have been able to do is in the menus allow subtitles....but here in lies the problem. By automatically picking up on each new programme that it comes with Subtitles it reinstates them with each new programme watched. Now whilst this wouldn't be a problem if I was married to a brit (unless of course she was hard of hearing) it is a pain for my household. Can Humax (via OTA update) perhaps do something along the same lines as Sky did a few years back and get rid of the need to go into the menu etc... It really is my only gripe.........

Before the box came out the features list mentioned one touch subtitles. Had this actually been the case it would have been a very nice feature. Unfortunately Humax have made this unnecessarily complicated with the requirement to go into a menu and select 'English' or 'Off'. I can't imagine that it would be that hard to have an option to simply toggle subtitles off and on which would make the box that little bit easier to use where poor sound engineering on the programme material means a quick look at the captions can help make a meaning clear.

Funnily enough I was playing with the subtitle option on the Humax yesterday. Flicking through the channels, at first I thought it wasn't working, and then that there wasn't any subtitles on programmes I knew there should be. Having found out how the subtitles actually work on the box, I agree it a strange way to implement this feature when most TVs / STBs allow you to just toggle.

I would imagine that this would be easily done with an OTA update? One could see the following option when using the remote. "Sub" then the OSD showing the following message "Subtitle on > off" Choice made and Roberta's your aunt. But on a channel by channel basis. It's really annoying with live programmes as the subtitles are a few seconds late or Panorama etc....
Glad I'm not alone though. |

This is what i would like Humax to do.....allow me to choose subtitles as and when we need them by simply pressing "sub"
The thing with subtitles is that you probably either want them on all the time, in which case going through the full menu system isn't a problem, or you want them on for very short spells to counter technical inadequacies in the programme in which case you want them as fast as possible. I don't know if anyone transmits subtitles in more than one language at the moment but it seems absurd to make everyone go through the whole menu palaver just on the off-chance that they might one day when even that possibility could be handled by an option about how the button works. |

You would think so.......but it simply doesn't work like that. You have to go through the whole charade of menu etc....This is what i would like Humax to do.....allow me to choose subtitles as and when we need them by simply pressing "sub"

Well it does on mine.......press sub, select English, press OK, pop up disappears after a few seconds and subtitles are now on.
It's just a rather cack handed way to handle turning subtitles on and off when toggling them with the 'sub' button would work perfectly well. Basically it involves three key presses when one would do, which is bad ergonomics. It's another of those little niggles with the rather 'clunky' user interface on this box. |

Ok I did that, sub-english and then it showed some kind of channel list (why) and then I pressed exit. And yes the subtitle was there...........but boy is that laborious (time consuming in case I spelled or spelt " labb*-°" wrong.
Anyway Robert the feline......sort it for us please. |

The Sub button does toggle the selection of subtitles, so if you press it a second time it jumps to the next on the list. It may not be "one touch" but "one button", this is because channels may have more than one language available.

there are also different variations of subtitles. On some channels you have DVB subtitles, and teletext subtitles (both English) to choose from.
When you press the sub button once, it selects subs. Simply don't touch the controller, and box will disappear after a few seconds and subs are enabled. |
