Hold the button down at the top for a few seconds until it asks you to 'slide to turn off' on the screen.

I didn't know how to lock it, until I found it out a couple of days ago after pressing the power button by accident

I never turn mine off. I'm sure it uses more power to boot down and back on again than it would to leave it "off". I use mine a lot so it is easier to have on demand...

Same here. I do the same as you. Ive had my iPod Touch for 7 months now and most of the time I just tap the switch at the top once for it to go to standby mode. Doing the slide to off way (powering it down completely) takes quite a chunk of the battery power when it needs to reboot the iPod OS again and takes quite a while to start up again.

I leave it in standby for the battery power reasons too.

I also found out today that pressing the Power button and the "home" button at the same time will also take a screenshot and that pressing the "home" button twice while in an application (other than the music player) will bring up the music controls. I've only had it 48 hours though.

It took me a couple of months to learn about the music control feature, but I blame that on being an early adopter of the 2G touch (even if the functionality was added before iPhone OS X 2.0.x).

I take it you know that pressing down on any icon will make them all go "wiggly" and allow you to move them around the home screen, also if you're using the browser you can save a picture by just holidng down on it and clicking save. I set a picture off the BBC site as my background.
