That's true, but Bonnie Langford showed how almost no skating can get you VERY far. I don't think anyone has beat her since for lifts and spectacular moves that don't require skating. She did get criticism for this as I said earlier and it's why she "only" came 3rd, but these tactics might be entirely necessary for those who cannot match Ray, in order to win votes and high marks. I like people being able to skate properly, but when someone is SO good, it's hard to object to using other methods, because I want a competition.

Ellery's not that good. Physically he should be able to do big lifts and may need to. He isn't as good as a Duncan or a Gareth and lacks their musicality.

Ray is good and probably has an X factor vote on top. He still got fewer marks than a week one Claire. He may or may not get much better and his partner is almost as big as him so we are not going to be seeing big lifts - his first ones were to thigh level for a good reason I expect.

We don't know about the girls. Jessica has some past, Gemma and Roxanne are claimed to have street cred. Zoe went up into a big lift and came down smoothly on what we saw of the girls. They all looked potentially better than a Zaarah on what we saw.

The problem for the girls may be that Colleen and Todd will acquire an anti-judge vote and if all 5 of the other girls are near enough in ability to share the same voters. The all girls week won't help if Colleen gets a sympathy vote as someone better than 5 boys may go.

It's only week 1 for the women, and already the predictable complaints about lifts have started.

In only a brief look around the forum, I've already seen a fair number of posts criticising Gemma for spending too much time being lifted rather than skating.

Oh, and a fair number slating her personality as well. (Also predictable.)

Looks a weaker field than it did last week . Roxanne doesn't look too promising. Gemma looked right physically but didn't show it and has gone. Jessica looks more of a Chris than a Suzanne or Claire. Melinda has the basics but has a big jump to make and must be near the bottom of the voting to move from third to bottom two . Zoe looks like daring do would be her thing if Matt could lift her but she's so long thats going to be a problem. Not sure if Jessica can out skate or out wow Ray or beat him on personality. Claire might have walked this series - a Duncan or Gareth might have been worth a bet.

One of the problems is that someone like Gemma will go out, even though she had the potential to improve greatly over the coming weeks, while a Coleen Nolan will stay and stay.

And (going by forum comments) the DOI viewer response is becoming more like the Big Brother one, with Gemma's VT's making her disliked and with the seed that Zoe talks too much is already well planted. How long before we start hearing that Jessica has "no personality", or is full herself, or is false, or one of the other standard complaints?

I liked Roxanne's routine best -- as dance -- out of any of them. I think she has potential if she can become a stronger skater. Otherwise, she may go the same way as Zaraah - graceful but not enough more. It's worrying that she had a start that was motionless on the ice for a very noticeable time (as did Melinda).

I thought Zoe was the strongest skater, though Jessica might have been better at technical details such as edges. But I think they will struggle to get popular support.

(Didn't Zoe go out of one of the other celeb shows, maybe Fame Academy, because of lack of support?)

Fake, Veri, Fake! Fake is the word. Or is that only on Big Brother?

Zoe may suffer in the way that Christine from the One Show did on Strictly - she freely expressed her doubts and fears and I think she was seen as insincere when she talked.

The last Celeb Fame Academy. She went out fifth and was in trouble before. That series was a mess though as the more interesting singers all went early too leaving soap girl with singing experience, soap boy with singing experience and novelty winner with one good song sung.

But Bonnie was in series 1 when they still didn't really know what they could expect of the celebs. Chris, Jayne and the judges were still learning what was possible as they went along and things have changed since then: they have a much better idea of what the celebs should be able to do. Btw, I don't know if you've seen Bonnie on tour but her skating's greatly improved since series 1.
