File Playback from USB Device
Got my HDR set up yesterday and very impressed so far. From what I've read on here today whilst at work and a quick flick through the manual I wanted to check something…
If I decide to archive some programmes onto a USB drive and leave it plugged in, can I playback straight from the drive, or do I have to copy back onto the internal drive? Similarly, if I have mp3s and jpegs on the USB drive, could I play/view these without copying them across? I doubt the answer will be the one I'd like it to be, but if it is this would be a very useful feature. If you can do this, has anyone tried it and has external drive access speed affected playback at all? Thanks |

Excellent work...
Re: the files being together - is that something that is done automatically when copying each programme from the decive and will only be a problem if I start transferring back and forth onto a PC, for instance? Basically, as long as I don't try to be clever, the box will figure it out for itself? Is there a USB input to use on the HDR which is best to use (I think there's one on the front and the rear?) |

That all sounds like great news. No problem with numbering as I'll probably just leave it plugged in.
So in terms of any issues I may have had with disk space in future, I can just attach my current (admittedly small) external drive (160GB) and once that's not big enough, buy as big a drive as I think I'll need. Maybe I should have expected this kind of functionality but to me this is much better than I would have imagined. Cheers |

Thanks again for that.
I'd seen about the HD transfer being blocked, which I can live with. The 4GB restriction - given I can only transfer SD anyway, any ideas what length a 3.99GB file would be? |

Sorry, to answer my own question... just done a quick calculation based on 320GB storage and 200 hours advertised SD storage I make that 2.5 hours? I guess that would normally be all I'd need.

I suppose the only issue then would be transferring films which (with adverts) could easily be over 4GB. Though at a guess, this is exactly what they're trying to prevent!

Fair enough - I guess I was just being overly cynical that this was a restriction imposed by the device at the request of the TV companies.
A 4GB limit is hardly restrictive though - I shall avoid trying to read between the lines in future! |

Wow, that shows quite a big difference in file size (and therefore quality I suppose).

Got to hold my hands up and say I was wrong then, nothing to do with film transfer restrictions!

It was Magnolia which is a pretty long film (the recording is 215 minutes), but on More4 so probably not broadcast at a very high bitrate. |

I know there's a thread for swapping the internal drives but there is a good offer on 1TB Western Digital My Book external drives for £63.61 from Comet (Free Delv) or £59 from PCW if you price match @ 110%
