Russia Today set for Freeview launch

Just got this reponse from Russia Today's Fred Perkins

Hi…. Yes, RT will be launching on Freeview very soon…albeit on quite restricted hours. It will be the same material as broadcast on the Sky etc platforms. We’ll be making a public announcement pretty soon, with the details.

Best regards,

Fred Perkins

I'll hazard a guess and say Channel 85 4am-8am using the downtime of Dave+1. Expect something next week as that is when Dave+1 hits Freeview.

Fred Perkins isn't a very Russian name - you'd think he could at least call himself Igor or something!

That's most likely. However, it could be between 5am-8.45am - I've just spotted a link between Russia Today and Playphone Hits (which is on TUTVA4). I have no idea what else is on TUTVA4, but if this is being run by Information TV rather than by TUTV themselves, it may be that Information TV (who broadcast Russia Today and Playphone Hits on Sky - that's the link) already have the rights to the gap between the end of TUTVA4 and the start of Gems TV AM.

Playphone also have their own License, but there's no mention of Information TV on it

Russia Today could be taking up Anytime 4 one day a week like PlayPhone Hits and Teachers TV. However I am inclined towards an on air time of 6am-8am on the Dave +1 stream with 4am-6am still up for grabs.

Wouldn't it make sense to roll out CNN LCN 84, Russia Today LCN 85 and Dave+1 LCN25 today. After all Dave+1 and R.T launch today week. But then that makes too much sense.

That would be to difficult... I am sure if I phoned a 100 people I would guess 90% of them didn't know there was new channels. and I would guess that 50% of them wouldn't know how to do a rescan.

Do boxes actually find channels automatically, like prompt to say channels found.

I have 1 box that adds new channels automatically, a woolworths box & a PVR, the last two both need rescans to find new channels, I assume they both have a nag screen to promt a rescan, but I switched that off on my PVR.

as for learning of these extra channels, I dobut that many people outside of people who read digital spy, know of Russia Today, and dont really care, Dave should promote Dave+1 launch, so that will help.

Why?

Can I ask the obvious question : Why would Russia Today be interested in broadcasting for 2 hours in the middle of the night in the UK? Is it as much because no-one else would want such a low profile slot? Is it because CNN is going into Freeview?

No one else wants it... but being in the middle of the night it's obviously a cheap slot for small broadcasters.

It's an assumption Russia today is taking night time downtime. They might be broadcasting limited hours during the day. Something will be out soon according to my contact Fred Perkins but WHY would they want a middle of the night slot which very few will see

Ray Cathode : That's not the point, as the propaganda is intended for non-Russian appearance. Think Radio Moscow for a new era in cheap suits and cheaper studios.
