Help! My 10yr old pleco seems to be dying
cjsoft

As the title suggests, I've come home from work tonight to find my 10yr old pleco, belly up at the bottom of the tank but still alive, he's a big boy over 20 inches long. Any advice please, or is he a lost cause?

I really don`t know what to suggest other than trying to find a vet who specialises in fish. Plecs are lovely. I hope it recovers.

I'm sorry.

You could try asking here

Thanks I'll check them out. Yes they are lovely, this particular one is so friendly, he likes his belly being stroked!

I've had him longer than I've had my dogs which seems kind of crazy in some respects.

Funnily enough my daughter has a coldwater pleco in a tank with two goldfish. It's about 6" but they don't grow as big as tropical ones. Was upside down and seemed dead so I got him out and put him in the kitchen bin but he moved. Put him back but he's not right and hasn't eaten for ages.

Sorry OP but sounds like he had a good life. Probably just old age. I lost a big 9" kissing gourami that I'd had 14 years!

That is sad 14 years

I still feel sad about my 12 year old goldfish Eddie. Tumors in the end

Awww, I'm sorry to hear about your fish. It's so sad when any loved pet dies.

I'd never heard of a pleco before so I looked it up on Google images - they are very beautiful fish.

They get quite big but are the only fish that can be kept with piranha as their hard exterior means the piranha can't eat them.

They have quirky characters, some can be ever so friendly, like mine was, but I had one before that was quite aggresive.

I suppose they are all different, but you don't normally associate fish with a personality.

I have other big fish, in the same tank that have the frozen blocks, he used to come up and take one from my fingers and swim on his back with it in his mouth like an ice lolly.

Stupid I know, but I'm gonna miss him big time.

Not stupid at all.

They get under your skin somehow. Even my new Betta I want the best for. I search the tank until I count all four Corrys.

To have a fish for ten years is no small feat. You are going to get attatched.

It's not stupid to care when you have had him for so long.
The fact he has lived with you for ten years shows you have looked after him well and all credit to you for that.

what species of pleco is this? most pleco's I know are tropical, theres hillstream loaches, which are sometimes sold as "coldwater plecos"

http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl...o+sucker&gbv=2

but they dont get near 6 inches.

Since its not eating it may be best to find out what species it is, and whether it would need tropical water, if so it would probably have to be slowly acclimatized.

He's about to pop his clogs I'm afraid. If not then it sounds like it could be Dropsy but he'd still be trying to swim if it was that.
I had my old fish (albeit a goldfish) for over 13 years and I was very sad to see Jaws go

Hiya Chris,
What type of pleco exactly is he? The only reason I ask is because plecos normally thrive in temps of 75+. I have known one or two keep them in coldwater tanks but it hasn't gone too well and also they had problems with the pleco sucking the slime coat of the goldfish which caused problems.
