Good news about my rats
Moll Flanders
15-01-2009
I just wanted to share my good news about my pet rats' progress, since we got them at an animal shelter three months ago. They had been there for four months and prior to that, had had a bad start in life. The result was that they were exceptionally shy and frightened, and spent the first few days cowering at the back of their cage, trying to bite us when we went near them.

Now, three months later, they are unrecognisable as those nervy, timid creatures. They are happy and relaxed and seem to love their home, and my husband and me. Although one of them unwound and became very affectionate very quickly, his brother was much more wary and even a couple of weeks ago was still going frantic with nerves if we tried to pick him up. Just over the last fortnight or so, though, he seems to have finally realised he can trust us, and now I can scoop him up and cuddle him, just like I can his brother. He runs up to me now for a fuss! It's so lovely.

When we first saw them at the shelter, we knew instantly they were The Ones for us - and we were right!

Aww, that's great, I think rats are lovely, my niece has a grey and white one who is really cute.
I think they make great pets, her one likes to sit on laps and everything, really sweet little thing

Picked them up this morning and we've let them settle a bit into their cage. They did get a bit of a shock when one of my cats spotted them and tried to stick her paw through the bars! I'm going to keep them seperated now until the boys are big enough to bite back if she tries it again! About 20 minutes ago I opened the cage door and the dark roan came out for a cuddle but the 2 beige roans are still a little nervous but will spend ages with them tonight when the kids are in bed!

I'll take photos tomorrow when they've settled in a bit more!

I'm a very excited new rat mummy!
