Recording start and end times
I've had my HDR set up for 3 days now and so far so good.
In most cases the programmes I've recorded have started at the opening titles and have ended shortly after the programme ended. However, I got it in the neck from my wife last night when her recording of Monarch of the Glen stopped about 5 minutes early so she missed the end. I know I can set programme times to start and end recording by a set time before or after the time listed. However, I was under the impression that when programmes are running late (say because of extra time in the football) that the EPG is updated and the recording starts and ends following the updated scheduling. If I set the end time to add 5 minutes at the end will I lose the benefit of this facility? I'm not sure how well I've explained myself there, but any advice would be welcomed. Thanks |

That's the idea. In practice is it a bit random. On 'lesser' channels, this start/end data are seldom updated, and on the BBC and ITV channels they can sometimes make a balls up of it, but other times they do get it right...

Hmm, thought that'd be the case.
So, just to clarify, if I set the start time on auto but the end time on +5 minutes, the recording will start as per the updated EPG and will end 5 minutes after the initially broadcast EPG (ie not as per the updated EPG where a previous programme has overrun)? |

This is correct, the manual says:
1. You can set the amount of time you want the recordings to start before the schedule billed time in the EPG. 2. You can set the amount of time you want to add to the end of a recordings billed time in the EPG. Practical evidence of this recently has been the first showing of Wallace and Gromit on BBC HD. The programme was 8 mins late (starting and ending). Those who used Accurate Recording (Auto) got the whole programme as the flags were changed correctly. Those who used padding ended up missing the END of the programme as you can only set a max of 5 mins on the end. I personally would stick to Accurate Recording, if most of your recordings are done on the main channels, and MANUALLY pad programmes on the lesser channels and for those programmes that I constantly miss the end of... |

Why can't end time +5 minutes actually mean +5 minutes on any updated epg ? that would be much more useful.
Is there a logical reason why setting to +5 minutes can't take note of an updated epg ? it seems pretty daft that it doesn't so i am guessing there is some technical reason for it. |

Thanks a lot for that son_t.
From what I can see there is no option to set this on a gramme by programme basis otherwise I'd set it up differently for the lesser channels. However, as the more important stuff we want to record tends to be on a main channel, I'll stick with Auto. Cheers |

You can change the start and end time of any recording to anything you want by editing it in the programme schedule.

I have mine set to Auto and have found on quite a few recordings it's I've missed a few seconds/minutes of the start i.e Castaway with Tom Hanks.
I do realise that this is down to the broadcasters, just a thought is there somewhere we can leave feedback to them when a recording fails or we miss a bit, rather than moaning on these forums. |

If the program overuns by more than 5 mins, you lose the end if you set it to 5 mins padding.
You can also lose the end by setting it to auto. Youre going to miss stuff either way which is annoying. Ideally it should always record 5 mins extra unless the finish flag hasnt been broadcast, then it should carry on more than 5 mins, that way you never miss the end of anything. I think auto is the best option myself although five do start some programs early. |
