Universal Remote for DHD4000

Is anybody currently using a Universal Remote with their DHD4000?

Do all the functions work? Is there anything you used to be able to do with the original remote not possible with a universal?

Which universal remote do you have?

The 'Up' button is getting sticky on mine, a replacement can be had for £20 but I could get a universal for about the same price.

I tried for a while, but it wasn't very satisfactory. A lot of "universal" remotes only have 4 (rather than 5) coloured buttons. I had one with 5, but the more significant problem was getting the fast forward and reverse functions to work properly. The best I could manage was to have a "null" button that I had to press in between pressing the forward or reverse buttons in order to get it to ramp the speed up and down.

This was only a cheapo universal remote, however. Perhaps more sophisticated programming is possible with an expensive one.

That rings bells with me too - didn't they use two alternating codes for some functions?I remember trying this with a cheapo one-for-all remote and finding it would only go up one speed in each direction.

I never found a uni remote that had skip forward and back buttons which I use these an awful lot for ad skipping. I even contemplated getting a Thomson TV to cut down on the quantity of remotes!

I've seen them on Ebay though, isn't this the right one? Mine says RCT 311 SE1G on it anyhow. This one is buy it now at £7.50.

Yes, I think that was the problem. My "null" button (just a valid code that didn't affect anything) reset the expectations of the receiver. Or something. I've forgotten everything except the clumsiness!

I wore thru' the rubber on my Thomson remote fast fwd & opted for a relatively expensive Logitech Harmony universal (£50 + I think), but it does have Rolls Royce build quality.
You can programme it via cd & usb on a PC.

In this mode it likes to group devices into activities, so turns down TV volume for example instead of PVR.
NO 5th colour button. No subtitles button.
But you could programme other buttons for these tasks, using the 'Head to Head' method. Logitech help line is reputed to be v.v. good.

So were you able to make the forward and rewind buttons behave in an identical manner to the ones on the Thomson remote?

Yes indeed including sequential speed increases.

I have a Logitech Harmony also (model 525) and it works perfectly for all of the DHD4000 functions.
Once I'd added the Thomson box to the devices to be controlled the only tweaking I did was to move a couple of function assignments; as I recall the EXIT button wasn't assigned properly and I moved LIVE operation to a button so I didn't need to select it from the LCD list of actions.
As said before this is all done from the PC and then updated to the remote over USB cable.
