Using the the BT Total Broadband speed test i get 2 completely different results

if i enter my postcode i get 5Mb
if i enter my phone no. i get 0.5MB

running an independent checker this one i get 800 kbps

i used to get 3.5Mb, any ideas?

this is in the wrong forum really, should be in the broad band.

sounds like a line fault to me. the post code checker is going on your distance. the phone number on your actual line.

not sure what you are asking....if you had / have
broadband ( an upto 8meg service) and you had/get 3 meg
then ( unless you have a fault ) then thats the speed your line supports regardless of what the speed estimaters say...
if you had 3meg and now only get 0.8meg then you have a fault...try pluggingyour router/modem into the test socket (if available) of your main tele socket to eliminate any internal wiring problems, if makes no difference call your
provider and report slow speeds and dont allow them to
fob you off with 'well 0.5 meg is all your line will allow'
if your service provider is a reseller of btwholesale broadband try 'speedtester.bt.com' and post your results

I could swear it says BroadBand Interent on the menu page.

Assuming that you use a BT Wholesale product?

1. That check is very inaccurate and BT advise you only use it if you do not have telephone number. (I have posted here how it woks on several occasions.)

2. That is more accurate but is still an estimate (It can't take the state of the pair of wires into account.) and tends towards pessimism.

3.0 That is an actual test but if you try three on-line checkers you will get three different answers.

Again, assuming that you use a BT Wholesale product.
