Nice to know it's so highly regarded by reviewers though even if they can't find the non Freesat mode! Interestingly, he even liked the remote! Easily pleased or what!

God that's the worst thing the supply issue needs. More magazines lauding its excellence!

Easy to use? Maybe it's better than others out there but the interface is still a dog. Have the designers and reviewers never used a Tivo - it should be the first step.

+1

FreeSat should have embedded TiVo as a monthly sub option. Comcast do it in the States - you can either choose their dog of a PVR, or TiVo for an extra $5/month.

Goes a bit against the "free" in freesat doesnt it? That was never going to be an option just like pay tv wasnt going to be an option with it.

Not having a dig, but why include the CI slot then ?

Just like the Free in Freeview precludes TopUp TV?! Not at all. There's nothing wrong with adding premium services onto an otherwise free service.

Two different services, the Freesat site even says no subscription.

"No contract, no subscription, just one payment"

Freesat is living up to its name, freeview isnt because it has Setanta and top up.

Subscriptions of any type will never happen on Freesat. Read more about their ideas and goals and you will find out why.

For FTV channels like FiveUS, FiveR and Ch4 HD?

A hardware manufacturer having a slot is totally different to wanting a subscription option inbuilt into the freesat platform.

I don't agree, Flyer 10. FreeSat and Freeview are both living up to their names just fine. There's nothing wrong with offering paid-for bolt-ons for those that want a bit more, providing the main service stays free. So you don't want to pay a penny? Well then don't buy the premium add-ons then!

The whole thing about Freesat is that is was going to have nothing to do with subscriptions. Especially one embedded into the system.

I dont have a problem with a card slot so you can watch things in non freesat mode but for example. I dont think we will ever see the likes of Setanta coming onto the freesat platform and EPG. It goes against their whole philosophy.

Nope, Freeview doesn't have any pay services, it's the same philosophy as Freesat. It's just that some boxes are dual-purpose, they can receive Freeview services AND pay services.

Does the Humax HD PVR deliver a good picture via satellite? I know I've asked this before so thanks for those comments. The reason I ask if because my neighbour cancelled his Sky due to poor reception when low cloud. I suppose you'd expect a bit of breakup but I'm new to satellite (currently have Humax 9200 on Freeview) so I don't know anything about it. However, I do like the look of the new Humax PVR machine and it's got a decent sized hard drive. I still can't decide whether to go with cable (virgin) or satellite. I recently ordered a virgin V+ box but cancelled it the following day when I realised that there was only one HD channel, BBC. Do you get more HD through Freesat and is reception good? I need to decide soon but having been a user of Humax PVRs for a few years I already know they give high quality. Also, if I went with the Freesat HD box would I still be able to use my 9200 with the Freeview? I'm not sure how it would all interact. Can anyone help?

Best wishes

Freesat has the same reception system as Sky, so if there is a break-up with a Sky box then there will also be break up with a Freesat box. Sounds like your neighbour's dish wasn't big enough or not aligned properly. It's not a fault of Sky or Freesat, it's just like having a dodgy aerial dangling in the wind. There should be no reception problems at all if correctly installed.

At the moment, HD channels on Freesat are BBC HD and ITV HD (although ITV doesn't currently have much content), Ch4 HD is expected later this year. You can also get Luxe HD by manually tuning it in.

You will still be able use your Freeview box in conjunction with Freesat, they do not interfere with each other in any way.

Firstly, there is no reason why anyone in UK with a properly aligned dish that is unobstructed by (for example) trees should get picture breakup due to low cloud. It could happen under extremely rare weather conditions, but normal dishes have enough weather margin for all normal conditions including quite heavy rain.

Next, is your Freeview reception reliable? If not, that could be a good reason for getting freesat. If Freeview is reliable, there may not be much benefit in getting freesat. You will get HD but, at present, only BBC HD in the evening plus two or three programmes a week on ITV HD if you are lucky. HD will also be coming to Freeview starting this year (depends where you live) although you will need new kit for it. All the main channels (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five and their offsping) are on both Freeview and freesat. There is a different selection of "extra" channels on the two services. Have a look at the freesat website http://www.freesat.co.uk/home.php to see what you'll get. Note that, although there are a number of channels not available on Freeview, there are also some Freeview channels missing.

Another thing to note is that some freesat channels, in particular the ITV channels, transmit at a slightly lower resolution than on Freeview.

No its not, you can buy their boxes with subscriptions, that will never happen with freesat.

There are several pay channels available on Freeview, there are zero pay channels available on freesat.

I for one hope that the addition of IPTV goes a little further than just iPlayer and brings some non-free content - a pay per view film and sport service would be very gratefully received.

I agree, I have freeview and Setanta, I'd love to move the Setanta onto satellite, you get a lot more channels and the picture on my Thomson DTI6300 is crap compared to the Hummy
