iTunes Rating question
player1
18-01-2009
Quick question....I have started to rate my albums in iTunes ( not individual tracks , I already do that as time allows ). I note hat when I rate an album then that same rating is "provisionally" assigned to any unrated track on that album ( a hollow star is assigned. )

Does that "hollow star" then get used in Smart Playlists ...ie if I have a smart playlist condition that says ..."only select tracks with rating greater than 3 stars", would it include these " provisional ratings" ( I don't really want it to, I only want to select tracks that I myself have individually rated ).

Hope this makes sense.

Answered my own question after playing about with iTunes...Smart Playlist does indeed include the "provisional" ratings....so question now becomes....how can I get Smart Playlists to ignore the "provisional assigned" ratings set by default to each unrated track when I rate the overall album, and only recognise tracks which I myself have individually rated ?

Why not just rate each album track individually yourself?

I'm trying to, but I have a lot of music to rate, and am working my way through it as time allows...spent months digitising my CD's before consigning them to the attic and Amazon mp3 downloads is my new best friend

Never seem to find enough time to listen ( and hence rate ) all my music, by the time I have worked through my weekly podcasts etc...not enuff hours in the day

I think if you are just going to rate the album as a whole you'll just have to live with itunes rating every other track you haven't to match the overall rating you gave the album.

Yeah, all my own CD's are boxed up and put away. Have started to download a lot more albums. Though I still buy some on CD. I've took full advantage of HMV's 2 for £10 deals and Zavvi going up the swanny.

But when it comes to new releases, I'm thinking hmmm I could download that for a lot less off Amazon or elsewhere. Plus once I burn in the CD I never use it again and I'm not sentimental about sleeve notes.

I want to rate all my itunes as well, but your right its a slow process.

Agreed...I've gone back and removed the album ratings ( good thing I had only just started rating the actual album ) ...I'll only add album ratings now to albums where I have already individually rated all the individual tracks. That will stop my Smart Playlists getting "polluted".

Smart Playlists are the "killer" function that has won me over to iTunes....incredibly powerful feature.

I expect you already know this. But I was pleasantly surprised to find shortly after getting my iPod Touch that you can rate the songs on there. The ratings, like any playcounts transferred to your library when you sync. Handy if you are out and about and want to do some song rating.

I do the same as my itunes library will not fit. I set the songs to 5 stars that I want to transfer over to the ipod.

Works well for me.

I just create a Smart Playlist called iPod Music and set some rules to add music to that playlist ...then I sync that Playlist alone to my iPod Touch...that works well

There is a utility on OS X called AutoRate which will rate your whole library for you based on the amount of times you have listened to a song etc - a goo place to start.
