Foxsat HDR and Late-running Programmes

Following last night's over-run of the snooker which delayed the start of Ski Sunday by nearly 35 minutes, I was wondering if anyone knows how long the Hummy would wait for the 'Start' signal before it gave up?

Last night my Hummy woke up at 19:45 to record Ski Sunday at 20:00. It happily remained in 'soft standby' until 20:33 when the programme actually began, and then recorded it properly. But what would have happened had Ski Sunday been hours later, or even postponed? Would the Hummy still be on and waiting?

I was really pleased with the HDR last night when it successfully recorded Gods and Monsters which followed the late snooker. It was scheduled for midnight but didn't actually start till 01:25.

Having noticed the late schedule, I had an eye on things. And as is usually the case, the little REC symbol popped up during the BBC2 ident.

I realise this is the sort of thing it's supposed to do, but I was still very impressed!

I had an overrun tennis match recording today, where the outcome was better but perplexing.
I wanted to see Andy Murrays 2nd round match.
It was set to record with no discretionary margins.
I let it all record then played catch-up so that I was running on live near the end when it suddenly cut out, near the end of the match.
An announcer advised me to press the Red button to continue watching the match. This didn't work !
Hours later I restarted the playback at 64X & near the end of the playback bar I returned to 1X to check when it actually stopped. (so that I could reply here.)
This time it was all there including the post-match commentator chat. With no sign of original break.
I suppose the HDR did the equivalent of pressing Red button at the appropriate instant. & if I hadn't played catch-up, then I think i would not have seen the hiccup.

If your supposition is correct, that is really very impressive.

Has any one else seen auto-lengthening of a recording?

Is it by design ? Manual P44 says

Note:
• On Time - the broadcasters signal will be used for
accurate recording when broadcast.
• 1,2,3,5 Mins - The minutes you select to the start
and/or end times will be included where possible
to the recordings.

A bit ambiguous to me. Why add minutes to recording if using the broadcasters signal ?

By the way, anyone seen an amplification of th manual ?
If your manual is lost you can print it from :-

For every upside there's a downside....

I have a series record set up for Working Lunch which yesterday should have been shown at 12:30. As I was watching the tennis, I was curious to see what happened. I was watching the TV coverage, so the Hummy was in standby. At 12:15 the Hummy woke up as expected, but shortly afterwards it went back into standby and never woke up to record Working Lunch, even when that was shown much later.

The reason was simple. The BBC was trying to plan ahead because of the overrunning tennis. Firstly, at midday, they announced that The Daily Politics would follow the tennis, and Working Lunch had been removed from the EPG. Thus, when the Hummy woke up at 12:15 it could not find Working Lunch in the EPG, so cancelled the programme and moved the series timer to today (Friday). At 12:30 a ticker announced that The Daily Politics and Working Lunch would follow the tennis and the EPG was then updated accordingly. So although the Beeb did its best to accomodate the changes, this did not translate into anything useful to the Humax. So much for Freesat+.

To be fair, I can't think of much else that might have coped in these circumstances, either. Perhaps a VCR with PDC?

Because some broadcasters don't operate the facility correctly

The BBC extended the broadcast but by 1 hour and 20 mins sadly the snooker still continued and I missed the final outcome

I have series links for both Daily Politics and Working Lunch using Auto mode. It recorded DP correctly at the much later starting time, and continued this same recording through WL and beyond. In fact it was still recording BBC2 at 4:30pm, so I had to stop it manually! The PVR also produced failed recordings of length 0 mins for both programmes.

Since switching back to Auto mode I've suffered several missed recordings when there was no danger of clashing, so presumably it's not seeing the start signalling for some programmes. This is even happening to programmes on BBC1 and BBC2. I've now reverted to 2 mins padding at both ends until this problem is fixed.

I once tried using padding and was immediately caught out by a programme that started 8 minutes late! I find the maximum setting of 5mins post padding to be a bit on the short side; I would prefer 10mins. BBC2 is often running 3-4mins late by 9pm and a 5min padding is sailing too close to the wind.

Also, by setting padding, it seems to me that I am abandoning any hope of timer extension, or is that not the case?

I would be interested if anyone can specify precisely how Freesat+ is supposed to work with changes to the EPG and how the different choices of padding and Auto affect this. I would also like to know more about the nature of the signalling which Auto relies upon.

After the snooker over ran my Hummy still managed to record Ski Sunday, however it carried on recrding for another 30 minutes, I noticed this and stopped it.
