project FAQ

We need an FAQ in this forum!!

Hello all,
I'm sure that like me, other regular contributors here have noticed the same questions coming up time and time again. So I spoke with the Forum Moderators and raised the idea of creating an FAQ and making it a sticky. Now comes the tricky part of making this happen, and that's where I need your help please.

Before we get started it's important to have a plan of what we're trying to build and some ground rules to help along the way. Here's what I have in mind:

Section 1) General advice to help you get a good response to your question

Good advice before posting a "How do I...?" technical question...
- We need to know the makes and models of what you have
- Tell us how you have things connected
- Give as much supporting info as possible

Good advice before posting a "What's best?" question...
- tell us your budget
- tell us your priorities - e.g. colour, style, features etc
- tell us about any limitations - e.g. max size

Section 2) Common questions & their solutions

optical splitters vs switches
connecting up...
etc
Section 3) How to use the forum 'search' feature

Section 4) Glossary of terms

Any other suggestions??????

How could we achieve this?

This thread will be for contributions to the final FAQ which will be a new clean thread (I hope to get the mods to agree to lock the FAQ except for edits as technology changes).

Please - NO FAN BOY ARGUMENTS or tit-for-tat debates. If there's a difference of opinion on something please take the discussion outside of the school gates and start your own thread. We'll be out after school to watch and shout "Fight. Fight. Fight!"

Please keep this thread on topic. If you have a general question along the lines of a "How to" then please post it in the regular forum. Ta

I hope that over the course of the next couple of weeks that together we can put together a really useful addition to this forum, encourage some new visitors, generate some links from other forum sites and generally improve the quantity of people we already give our excellent advice too.

Regards

Chris

VIEWING DISTANCE!!

Get people to state max size AND viewing distance when asking about a new TV. The inevitable "Will I get any bebefit from Full HD?" question can't really be answered without it.

PS: Very good idea Chris.

what are their sources?sky box, freeview etc etc

agree with viewing distance it is a must but too many people just guess it and might be surprised if they actually measured it!

maybe an explanantion of why full hd 1080p at certain viewing distances would be unnecessary?most people seem to think its the best resolution so must be what i want thus wasting a good few quid on a 1080p set that they wouldn't notice the difference when it was sat next to a 768 lines set displaying the same source

A section/explanation on HD audio - the various ways it can be decoded/sent and what equipment is needed.

A brief explanation about HDMI, maybe a link to their web site.

Sounds like a realy good idea to me, the sooner you get it running the better.

I've done a similar project on the Computers and Networking topic.

Do your message as usual. Then contact support and ask them to pin it to the top of the topic.

You can keep it clean by asking them to remove or move posts by others into new threads. This gives you the opportunity to make any reply look like an addendum.

One of the common questions seems to be the 'what are my rights' when there is a problem. Frequently alot of highly misleading information is posted by people who have "read" the Sale and Supply of Goods Act and believe (incorrectly) that it applies as you read it. Many of us have pointed out it's not that straightforward.

Perhaps something on this could be included ?

Good ideas. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks

Might be worth having an external links section. This would allow people to get to information direct from people like eicta, Freview, Freesat, Dolby etc without having to repeat the info on the boards pages.

To be useful the FAQ really need to be a sub forum where each topic heading has its own thread, so that there is at best one just one large post on that subject. ( regularly updated) of course)

Most FAQ threads you see on any forums tend to be too many pages long to be useful

The sticky should push you that sub forum
