Miss-read the question .....

Mind you, I seem to remember noticing in the shops that there were often two types of recordable CD's for sale. Some for music system CD recorders, some for PC's. No idea what the difference is/was!

Home audio recorders require special 'audio' discs, these are more expensive as part of the money (supposedly) goes to the artists who's music you're supposedly ripping off.

If you're using it for recording your own music, tough - you still pay as if you're ripping other artists off.

They have some kind of identifier on the disc, which is checked before it can work, the discs are no different as such.

Still available, a little more expensive than PC ones. I haven't used my home CD recorder since I got a PC.

As I understand it, the general view is that re-writables are rather "sensitive " ( like prima donnas / highly strung thoroughbreds ? ) in use ie they work in some machines, but inexplicably, not in others.

I know a sound engineer who has tried to use them as part of his work-flow, but of all the machines available to him the best results were with an old, cheap, portable walkman-type clam shell.

Nothing inexplicable about it at all - it's incredibly simple.

CD players work by bouncing a beam of light off the disc, a normal stamped CD reflects something like 85% of the light back, a CDR only reflects something like 40-50% back, and a CDRW only 10-15% back.

Older CD players were never designed for anything other than stamped CD's, and the much lower amount of reflected light is below their capabilities.

In more recent years plenty of CD players, particularly portable ones, are now specified as suitable for CDRW.

^^^ any of the ones in those links should work. But only the ones in the first link are RW's, the others are plain R's.

For an audio recorder, you buy specific audio only discs, which are CDR only.

You can also buy audio cr-rw, I have a denon audio system and use them as well as the cd-r's.

Interesting thread, I've always wondered why my recorded CDs would not play in my old CD player.

Interesting...
Does the same (reflected light) also apply to DVD's?,
I ask this because some DVD's that I make will play perfectly well on my cheap LG DVD recorder, but will not play on other DVD players. Says there is no disc.
Or is this something else entirely?

Does your recorder even accept CDRW's?, why not just use CDR's?.

What do you mean by 'normalise'?, and why would that need CDRW's?.

For that matter why not just do it on your computer?.
