I long for the essence to return to BB, that is, the pure interactions of 12 incarcerated persons deprived of outside influence and writing implements, and privations namely hand washes and restricted food budget and our observations of it.
I feel like one of my favourite unique "happenings" (Big Brother)has been hijacked over the years by the usual TV downward spiral of imposed "dumbing down" standards and it is because of that more than anything that I comment so vehemently regarding the likes of Stout and manufactured "winners". Ugh!
It's difficult to be objective now, it's the cynicism instilled from years of Endemall bullshit. Is nothing sacrosanct?
”

Just play your BB1 DVD and think back to happier times, Maisy.

Hi Ben!
Wasn't Lisa wailing about having trouble breathing?
I didn't think a fag would've helped in that instance!!*
”

Panic attacks are linked to breathing - it's to do with oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.

Also, believe it or not, smoking a cigarette actually opens up the bronchial tubes. There was a time when cigarettes were prescribed to asthmatics. I know - doesn't that sound like the most stupid thing ever with hindsight?

That's why you'll find smokers lighting up after a heavy bout of coughing and saying it makes them feel better. It's not just a psychological thing.

And now I'm gonna stick a smilie on because I sound all pompous and criticial in this post and that's not my intention

Ben - I have all the regalia of BB1 and I thoroughly enjoyed the unique experience. I know it can be criticised but that's as close as we'll get to the ostensible experiment in my view. It's been a downhill path ever since. I really did watch BB1 to see how the HMs reacted to their incarceration.
Subsequently C4 identified "ingredients" and went OTT on "characters" and manufactured situations, where neither were needed. What a waste of a great on-going experiment.

Edna - the received wisdom re breathing and smokers is that the two are mutually exclusive hence the passive-smoking debate.
Lisa was a complete bigheaded bore with nothing to be bigheaded about. BBLB let her enact all the things she couldn't in BB and she was sated. I find support for the likes of brow-beaters like Lisa and gobsh*tes like Jade spurious as in real life no way would you want to get stuck in a lift with either, if you're honest.

Not a vice Ben! It's a vocation for me!!
My you must have an iron constitution to endure Stout and co without recourse to a self induced altered state!!
”

I must admit I was tempted this morning. I finally succumbed and bought the BB4 DVD (just to qualify that, I got it off ebay for about a fiver), and it was the first time I'd seen Stout on my screen since July.

Ugh. He's revolting - both physically and spiritually.

Amen to that - (to lapse into pseudo-stout-speak).
Well that was brave I must say, buying the DVD but then I still have all the videos I made of BB4 and just dug out the Ray/Camoron "wrist twisting" incident yesterday to remind myself (lest I should need it) of what a kindhearted soul he is.
Had a look at Lisa while I was about it too - see if time had softened my opinion of her.
Might have a few decades to wait yet...

Yep, quite right. I really wish I could find a link about it - it's been ages since I read about this. Cigarette smoke causes long term damage because of the tar, but I think it's the nicotine that acts as a bronchial dilator in the short term.

Obviously doctors wouldn't tell an asthmatic to smoke these days because they know about the long-term effects now.

An interesting debate that concerns me as I go out a lot and therefore I am an absolutely classic passive smoker-but that is all as i cannot even inhale properly.

The trick even if I did master the skill would be just the odd ciggy now and again-probably quietely so friends did not know and pressurise you into having more than you want.
Obviusely the nicotine high is what is wanted.
And even some sort of placebo is better than nothing at all.

I am one of those who has the bad vice of smoking, when I have a bad cough the ONLY thing that stops it is a ciggie, I asked the doctor about this and apparantly you have little hairs on your bronchial tubes and when you have a cough its because these hairs are moving backwards and forwards, the nicotine in a ciggie acts as an anaesthetic hence the coughing stops.

My sister had an illness that required an operation, she was so nervous about it she took up smoking again, the symptoms of the illness went, she spoke to her GP about this and he said research has shown that nicotine can supress some illnesesses and eventually they go, but of course he cannot go around recommending smoking to people who have the same illness as my sister had.

Oh and I dont like Cameron, but when Steph was being sick after the punch, Cam did help her, he brought her the bucket when she went to bed and he slept in the bed opposite her all night just in case she was ill again.

Don't you wonder if Lisa's panick/asthma attack when she was due to take part in the task could've been part of her adgenda to stir things up? It certainly worked on Cameron - if looks could kill..

It was a very hot day, she was over dressed for the task, she was upset at the way that they had been treating her, she was tired from all the rehearsals .... she had a panic attack ... so what?

So... I just wondered if she was stirring things up, as instructed. Didn't I make that clear in my post?

Yes you did ... apologies. I cut my post short for some unknown reason.

On this occasion, I don't think that she was attempting to stir. I think she was genuinely having a panic attack.

I just think she was to scared to do it in case she failed so feigned a panic attatck.

Well she was obviously in distress and it takes a very hard person not to have some sympathy with that

Even if cameron did think she was faking it - he could never be 100% sure could he - and yet he still condemned her

i am somewhat at a loss to why he had such an extreme reaction to her presence - maybe sexual tension who knows- he didn't seem to mind her massaging him

I think that Lisa had a genuine attack but it was her 1st for something like 15 years so i dont think she lit up a ciggie for medical reasons. More to do with stupidity

Re the smoking maybe helping, what about non-smokers who have panic attacks ? I cant see them being advised to carry cigs around cos its beneficial if they have an attack. This sounds like a myth to me altho maybe its true.

I thought she had an asthma attack in which case they usually use a nebusliser/steroid thingy. Never heard of an asthmatic lighting up a cigarette when they have an attack

But I dunno

Camerons behaviour was atrocious of course and he should be villified at all times

maybe it wasnt an asthma attack. I remember something like it was a restricted windpipe or sommat. Anyway I dont think any medical benefit crossed Lisa s mind when she sat down to have a cig afterwards but I could be wrong (cos I cant remember what she said etc)

I think Lisa's panic attack should be taken at face value. We really don't have any real reason not to.

I didn't particularly like Lisa but I was concerned for her welfare watching that. I also remember a time during BB3 when Kate got an umbrella, wrapped herself in a towel and walked out into the pouring rain during a thunderstorm just to use the toilet and my heart went out to her, even though I didn't really like any of the BB3 lot.

I'd like to think of it as just being humane.

People who suffer acute respiratory distress do not continue to walk around. It's an involuntary reaction brought about by the autonomic nervous system.

The body recognises the threat of oxygen difficiency and automatically starts to preserve it by limiting other functions that will burn up potentially precious supplies. The primary function stopped is movement.

Surely Lisa is in hindside one of the true heroes of BB4.

Even Dermot acknowledged this by finishing the whole Channel4 coverage by doing a comedy gag routine with Lisa specifically and not anyone else.

It must be hard going in after the start no-one has succeeded-I thought Tim was going to but then his brain turned to mushy peas. Also Soph came in after only a week but still got bullied as an etranger.
My only thought was Lisa might have been quieter for say 2 days and stroked everyone a bit –before letting rip at everything.(She knew she had two weeks to play with)

There were things Lisa said that werent shown on any of the BB programes, even the live ones.

Those of you who have the DVD will know what I mean, I have never known anyone to boast as much as she did.

Everyman thought she was georgeous, every man that had a date with her couldnt beleive their luck at finding such a beautiful woman.

I think if she had have kept the boasting down a bit she would have been more liked. I still think she was a plant though!
