... what?

I was dusting the living room just now; everyone else had buggered off out so I decided to blast some music while I worked. I played Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull, one of my all time favourite pieces of music and I got to thinking:

Since the 'Thick as a Brick era', i.e. 70's progressive IMHO everything went downhill. I'm not just refering to Tull here, there were lots of great bands putting out good, well thought out music with meaningful and thought provoking lyrics around that time.

Since that era I've never found any 'pop / rock' music as intellectually challenging and as thought provoking to listen too. Oh I know there's the long standing supergroups like Metallica that have kept going to a certain extent (yes, not exactly 'progressive' style I know, but nevertheless) but to me nothing beats, or even comes close to 70's progressive.

So is there such music that I've simply missed? Is it just me becoming an old codger? Help me out here people! Point me to some good music with good lyrics in that vein. Or simply tell my I'm drifiting into my dotage and have gone tone deaf Whatever

Thanks guys.

Interesting post.
I was a big Yes fan up to Tales From Topographic Oceans which like many people at the time just I found completely absurd and pretentious.
After that they went poppier, Wakeman left and were not much cop.
However I listened to TFTO for the first time in an age about a year ago, and now find it quite brilliant.
They just dont make em like that any more.

I think part of the problem was that prog rock was exactly that - it was a development of music that hadn't been seen before, and since then obviously nothing will quite match up because music will never be that new and fresh again. Much music these days is inspired by that era, so while they don't make 'em like they used to at least it had an impact and shaped the music of today.

OP you sound pretty much like my dad! I know the popular music of today is mostly shite but it makes it more fun, going out and finding little gems yourself

As a dedicated progger, I have to agree that the best of music was in the early to mid 70s. I still love other music from every other period, but nothing would be better than if I could go back in time to see Focus at the Rainbow. Prog heaven.

I couldn't give a stuff if anyone does consider me an old codger - I'm happy! And I'll die happy after meeting my hero of heroes, Thijs van Leer, in October - and telling him that he is my God!

Hey, I said they were inspired, doesn't mean it was executed well!
