It's a shame he's so dislikable.
Can't say I've seen anything on the show that makes me dislike him. He seems straightforward, excitable and enthusiastic. I haven't seen real arrogance or smugness at all.

This is suprising really as he is really good and is a very young man. Most in his situation would not have the maturity not to let their pretty natural confidence, even slight arrogance, show much more.

He is just really, really young - and very, very talented.

Why?
I didn't see much of him on the X factor - did he say something there?
He certainly hasn't acted boastfully on this programme so I really struggle to understand why people suggest he is a dislikeable person. He's no oil painting for sure but his skating is spectacular and the performance tonight was just gorgeous.

I thought he was fantastic both two weeks ago and last night. I also think he's got a great personality. I really didn't like Chris Fountain last year, to me he was so cocky about his skating ability and I was so pleased Susanne won - this year Ray doesn't have that cockiness, he just seems to genuinely enjoy it and be pleased that his dancing skills can be translated into ice dance.

I don't think he's 'so dislikeable' and clearly the public don't either given that he's stayed out of the skate off so far.

Apart from some people on here everyone I know thinks he's great (and no I'm not still at school btw ). Even my husband who is real cynic thinks he's great.

I'm getting on so didn't know him before this show.

As far as I'm concerned I think he could make it the most memorable series ever. If he can do this now, I look forward to the weeks ahead. His potential means that we could see skating much better than ever before.

I don't know about being dislikeable, I just find him young, energetic and keen. A lot of blokes his age are really objectionable.

Totally agree petertard - he is wonderful to watch - her really dances on ice. He has grace, strength and fluidity of movement. He is seriously talented and I don't give a damn what he did before.

He also seems to be a nice young man. Don't understand the anti- Ray stuff I've seen.
Thats a nice thing to say Rhumbatugger.
My daughter knows Ray and hes a lovely guy and an absolute credit to this city unlike other "celebs"i could mention.
we were dead proud of him tonight and to the people saying hes smug and arrogant and wont win ill be here to see you eat your words in a month or two.

minxymoo,

I seriously believe he could take it to a level we haven't seen before from a celeb. I look forward to that.

Complete agree with Puffle. Why do people confuse or want to put down pure enthusiasm and joy for what they are doing with cockiness and arrogance? Can't wait to see what he does - and how he improves and learns more with each week.

I could watch him for ages too.... surely he could easily become a professional ice-skater as it's all so effortless to him!
He looks more professional than some of the professionals and this is only week 3

Maybe he'll be dancing with a celeb next year!

Still won't win though.
Don't put money on it: Ray's got the lot - come the final viewers will hopefully vote for talent over a passing likeability of the less able.

I watched him on X Factor and he came across as a very nice young man if I remember he was very hypa and was advised to slow down the dancing while he sang, he seems to be the same on the ice.
I also find it strange that so many dislike him

I'm not understanding the Ray hate, either - to me he comes across as a genuine, lovely guy, with no arrogance about him at all (he certainly gave Maria her dues), and he absolutely takes my breath away on the ice. He has so many reasons to be conceited about his performances so far but I'm not getting a trace of smug or big-headed at all.

I sincerely hope he stays in for the full run of the competition and I'd be heartily pleased to see him lift the trophy. Special stuff.

Ray is almost too enthusiastic which can grate on some. I know it did on me during X Factor and, coupled with the fact that I didn't really rate his singing either, this made me take against him.

However, I can't deny that his skating is mesmerising. He looks totally comfortable on the ice and his dance skills make for a really fluid performance. I don't doubt that his previous dance experience and talent coupled with his undoubted excellent balance and fearlessness borne of his rollerblading experience are a huge advantage but somehow it doesn't bother me. I'm really looking forward to seeing just how good he can get. I just hope the public don't vote him off too early because of his background - I think he could become absolutely outstanding if he's allowed to hang around and I, for one, would like to see that.

Should the public ever dump him in the dance off - he would be saved by the judges - and rightfully so. It's early days, but at this stage no one else can touch him.

Don't know why people think Ray is disliked - he is no more smug than he was in the X factor.

And let's not forget - he was an average singer that four out of ten viewers voted for in preference to Leona Lewis in the X factor final. That's no mean achievement considering she is the best female singer to come out of the UK in years.

I can perfectly see Ray winning - except against Todd. Would love a Todd vs Ray final!

I don't see smugness at all - he's only 20 and seems young and enthusiastic to me. And if it is smugness, it's the kind that comes out of being a ballroom/singing/skating talent, and it's not undeserved. It's great he has so much confidence, especially when you compare it to all the struggling for the rest of the celebs. I'm sure people like to see 'journeys' but gosh, given that we have 90 minutes of wobbling to have to sit through, I'd like to see at least one great skate and one where I'm not constantly waiting for the celeb to spill!

That is, of course, true. I don't really see him going anywhere either. I think what I'm really hoping is that the public cut him some slack on experience. I don't want him to become the celeb that the public don't take to but who the judges save time after time on ability.

I think Ray is far from the boastful character some are portraying them as. Are the Ray haters the ones who disliked Chris Fountain last year? If you want to talk about an unpleasant, boastful young man CF fits that role perfectly. Ray is just talented and a joy to watch on the ice.

Me too tabitha - no matter how often we reiterate that rollerblading does not equate to ice dancing some will never be convinced, just as some don't want to be.

I simply hope that the most talented skater to date on DOI, is given a fair crack of the whip.

I thought his interpretation and feeling were excellent, his skating pretty fantastic, the lines he made with his body looked spot on. Can't fault him. Regardless of how good he is right now, as he continues he will have a journey and improve, although on a different level to most of the others.
