Demand Five

After really putting down the on-demand player from Five, I would like to say how great it is now! Literally over night they have changed the player so that it does not buffer every few seconds.

It is still a little bit jumpy, but a massive improvement from the old WMP.

Well done Five!

Hi
After spending a hour each night for a week in contact with the live help folk from Demand five trying to get the Royal Christmas Lectures to work on my computer.
I finally gave up and resigned myself to the fact I would have to buy the DVD's in march.
They would have had me changing all sorts of stuff on my computer (Delete cookies change settings) even though I told them that all the other programs worked ok.

Tonight I tried just out of curiosity and guess what the lectures worked just fine.

It must have been something they did as I have not changed anything since the last time I tried.

But if you want to watch them be soon only 1 day left for the first lecture's availability

I am afraid I do find it is buffering every few seconds I am trying to watch an episode of "The Mentalist" that I missed (as I don't have Fiver or Five USA or whatever it is repeated on, as sadly I have FreeSat). If I pause it frequently, it "catches up" and runs smoothly for 10 seconds or so, but then it starts buffering, buffering, buffering all over again... Any ideas, please, other than "Change your IP"? Thanks!

Try at a different time of the day. 7-10pm is "peak hours" for most ISPs and, while you don't say who you're with, pound to a penny they operate a capping procedure for video streams during the evenings...

Five has hired Red Bee Media to manage its video on-demand and digital content distribution business going forward.

Under the arrangement, Red Bee Media will handle the Demand Five VOD service, along with all syndication and live streaming of digital content, including the long-form video deal with YouTube UK.

The digital distribution firm, which was previously BBC Broadcast, will use its Media Gateway file acceleration platform to manage Five's content, including all transcoding to multiple formats and enhancement with idents and on-screen graphics.

Five's controller of VOD & technology Paul Thornton-Jones claimed that the deal "signals a new era" in Five's digital media strategy.

"The VOD world is rapidly changing and as a result the technology and workflows required are increasingly sophisticated," he said.

"Red Bee Media's advanced integrated media solutions and multi-platform know-how provides us with the expertise to help continue to grow our digital offering and in turn our audience base."

Red Bee Media chief commercial officer Alan Wright added: "As a company which continually pushes the boundaries of broadcast and broadband, we are delighted to be Five's chosen partner to take their digital offering to the next level.

"Five's decision demonstrates confidence in both our operational capabilities and our vision of the future of on demand."

Last month, Red Bee announced the appointment of former BT executive Brian Levy, who helped develop the BT Vision digital TV service, as its new chief technology officer.”
