See here:

I came across this looking for a cheap Blu Ray player for sale at Christmas which seems to have vanished.

Seems a strange move to stock such obsolete technology. Cash Converters sell them for about £5 now. I am sure Comet stopped any stock of them some years ago now.

They want £60 at Argos for that VHS. I would say the credit crunch could have made them offer these cheap but Freeview PVR's can be found at that price.

It is NICAM ..... and you can get a 'special offer' cut price gold scart lead if you buy it.

Anyone?? ...... what do you mean, NO.

What if you have a large collection of VHS tapes and your VHS player is broken? PVR is no good to you for that. Someone should stock them as long as they are being made, and presumably Argos wouldn't if they didn't sell them.

Not everywhere has a Cash Converters and some people are wary about buying second-hand / recond.

Comet are still listing a couple of VCRs:

I suspect when DSO gets underway next year they'll discontinue them. Whilst some people still want them, and they're still being made, retailers will stock them.

I agree with allafix and AlanO. You'd be surprised how many folk there are who still use VHS. They'd have kittens if you gave them a VHS/DVD combi. They're far more comfortable with the idea of one machine for one task.

Never underestimate the market. Sony and Microsoft did. Now they play second fiddle to Nintendo as the Wii outsells them both.

I think VHS players should still be on sale untill at lest the hole of the UK has gone all digital in 2012. They should also keep selling VHS/DVD combi long after they stop just the VHS player.

At least with a Video, if u switch off in the middle of a prog to watch later, it stays where u left it, not like DVD where u have to fart about finding where u were

DVD players can do that too, maybe not all of them but mine does.

My DVD player does that as does my PS3. Most DVD players have a memory.

What amazed me about the PS3 was that I was watching a DVD up to a certain point, ejected it, put another copy of the same film in and it played it from the same point as the other disk - totally shocked!

As long as back collections exist they should still sell cheap vhs players. And whats it to people if they still sell old technology? It causes more good than bad. And i'm sure I seen a vhs player in comet last time I was in.

If you live in an area with no Freeview then an old analogue VCR beats a brand new PVR every time.

For those of us with another 3.5 years to wait for DSO, VCRs are still quite useful.

My PC remembers where you stoped watching a DVD when you go back to it a few days later.

I think what you have to remember here is that the vast

majority of the public unlike most of this forums viewers do

not have any interest in technology.

As long as there is a picture and sound thats all they want.

So Argos and others will cater for this market it makes good

sense and turnover

I'm tempted, my vhs died about 6 months ago and I can't get my head round what dvd recorder to buy. Looking online etc is just giving me a headache.

Do I get a Freeview +? Is it worth paying extra? Will I be able to work it?

I know I am making a hard job of this, but for a techno phobe it is hard work.

If you are open to an opinion then I'd say forget a DVD Recorder unless you are seriously into archiving TV programmes. Here's why...

Most of us started out with a VHS recorder, right? And I bet that like me you probably had the same tape in there most of the time when making recordings. Some folk had 'His' and 'Her' tapes so you didn't have to wade through hours of soaps to get to the footy, but it boiled down to a similar thing. Very few of us actually made recordings to keep.

If that sounds like you then it will be exactly the same if you get a DVD Recorder. One or two discs will get used over and over again. If you buy a DVD Recorder with a hard drive then I'll bet you hardly ever bother recording to disc because the hard drive is so much more convenient.

Now the big problem with most DVD-Recorders and DVD-Hard drive recorders is that they can only record one channel at once.

What you really want is something with two TV tuners. On top of that it's got to be easy to use. I got a call from a customer who bought himself a lovely Samsung DVD-HDD recorder from Costco but couldn't fathom all the different options for recording and playing. It was a complete nightmare to use. I advised him to take it back and buy a Humax or Topfield Freeview hard disc recorder. These are just so much simpler to use.

The Humax is probably the easyest to use twin channel PVR on the planet. Recording is point-and-click simple. Use the TV guide, move the highlighter to the program you want which could be on today, tonight, tomorrow or next week, press record and the recording will be made for you. Playback is equally simple. Here's a list of your recorded programs. Point and click the one you want to watch.

Both the Humax and Topfield will let you record one thing whilst watching something else. They can both pause live TV, rewind to see again and fast forward to catch up to real time. They'll even record two programs at the same time and let you playback a previous recording all at the same time. And unlike your VHS these recorders don't have to be in standby to make a recording. Both will also play out so you can record to a separate DVD Recorder if you want to archive.

Humax PVR-9300T

Topfield TF5800

Hope this is helpful

Regards

Chris
