Yep I'm one! I bought their greatest hits CD only a few months ago and its great. A few of the tracks "Walls come tumbling down", "Long Hot Summer" and "Shout to the top" I remember being released when I was a kid. However other singles that are less well know are fantastic too.
Some of favourites include: Have you ever had it blue Speak like a child How she threw it all away I am very tempted to but some of their original albums, has anyone got any reccomendations?

Tempted with a best of actually, know a few singles etc, but was perhaps a bit too young for them first time around... That said one of my best mates has always been a big 'Jam' fan, and he's as young as me (27)

My husband has got everything Weller has ever made and, according to him, The Style Council were good for the first couple of albums but anything after The Orange Album was crap.
But he also says Weller did the best thing by breaking up The Jam when he did (even though it broke his heart at the time) and they didnt drag on for years and become a parody of themselves. |

Top band but a lot of people just didn't 'get' it. 'Shout To The Top' and 'Money-Go-Round' are ace.
Anybody else on here know about 'Moderism'? Weller got into Balearic house towards the end of the 80s and the subsequent LP was latly rejected by Polydor, explaining his sub-disappearance between 1988 and 1991. It's all on the SC box set now though. |

'A Solid Bond In Your Heart' was indeed written for The Jam. Their version is on the rarities CD 'Extras'. There's another unreleased song on there called 'No One In The World' which is ace, and quality covers of 'And Your Bird Can Sing' and 'Fever' too. I really recommend that CD.
'Modernism - A New Decade' was done in 1989, just after the 'Promised Land' cover, and put out with the Polydor bins straight away, btw. |

As much as it killed the fans and Weller himself, splitting up The Jam was the only thing he could do to safeguard their legacy as the best band of their generation.
A lot of people hated the Style Council simply because they were Jam fans and Weller just came out of left field with the musical style of the SC. But taking them on their merits, they were a great singles band, and Singular Adventures was a great album. Of course, the band was inextricably linked with Red Wedge and the left-wing political scene going on at the time, and true to form Weller got tired of both the music and the image and split the band up just like he had The Jam. I haven't got around to hearing his late-80s stuff (my mum's got the boxed set and I keep meaning to pinch it), but from what i've heard it's some typically interesting stuff from a period before he jumped right back on the guitar rock wagon and brought us Wild Wood. |

Opinions on The Style Council
Paul Weller was underrated for his songwriting, probably following in the wake of the Police >Sting got the majority of the publicity at around the same time Then again Clash > Big Audio Dynamite If only Mr Weller had stuck to lyrics for lyrics sake instead of bringing in a political bent, when only a musical suggestion would have done the job for the listening generation amicably.. Once youve gone down the route of stating opinion by record, youve got maybe 50% max of the audience behind you , and usually the others are in the position to kill the mike. Cult status for him, but the band (and that truly dire name - Style Council ) pull Paul up to the middle road with the other also rans. |

Thts possibly whats happened here cos all he songs are about 18-25 years old so I doubt it was his decision. |

Who?
Now thers a band Mr Weller yearned to be associated with also rans - an equestrian turf accountants term, not a group (not that I know of anyway) Still The Also Rans is a catchy band name, maybe its got some foundation |
