Discuss this classic 1989 album.

And, if you can, try and explain to me why you think Angel Dust is the better album and, thus, FNM's masterpiece.

I love Faith No More. I saw them live in 1993 and they were amazing. Mike Patton had the best live voice I ever heard. And he was gorgeous.

I love 'From out of Nowhere'. What a great band. Can't believe the album's 20 years old! I remember them on Top of the Pops doing 'Epic' and Mike Patton was not even trying to mime, it was very funny.

Both great albums although I play Real Thing more it seems. Falling To Pieces is my favourite track on there.
I will dig out AD for tomorrow now.

I like Angel Dust but i just can't see how people can consider it better than The Real Thing.

Every single song on here is great, from the 3 classic singles From Out Of Nowhere, Epic and Falling To Pieces to the really hard songs like Suprise! You're Dead and Woodpecker from Mars to the epics like Zombie Eaters, The Real Thing and The Morning After to the insanely catchy Underwater Love to their cover of War Pigs (better than the original) to the sleazy laid back finisher Edge Of The World.

The perfect mixture between really hard riff-heavy metal and the synth-pop aesthetic of, say, late 80s Depeche Mode, great songwriting and a singer with one of the most interesting voices i've ever heard.

I just wish they'd put the Patton version of As The Worm Turns on here.

Who remembers the You Fat Bastards : Live At Brixton Academy vhs? It's up on Youtube :

Err...because it is.

"The Real Thing" is cool, but it's a product of it's time. It's a safe album compared to "Angel Dust", which was off-kilter, edgy and had the better songs.

There's nothing on "The Real Thing" that can touch the pure perfection of "A Small Victory" or "Midlife Crisis", or the twisted genius of gems such as "Malpractice" and "Crack Hitler".

Angel Dust is pretty much a product of its time as well, though, and just because an album is more experimental it doesn't necessarily make it better.

My wife was a big Faith No More fan, and picked up 'The Real Thing' cd for 99p on eBay.

Listening back, I'm amazed at how much they sound like the Chilli Peppers but with added keyboards! Anyone else notice this, or is it just me?

Please don't say that (i despise the Chilli Peppers).

Actually, i did think that at the time in '89 when i first heard Epic with the staccato rapped style vocals and the slap-bass but then i heard the album when a friend dubbed it for me and their sound was so much more developed than what the Chilli Peppers were doing.

Patton is a really great vocalist whereas Kiedis is just an annoying wacky goon.

I think The Real Thing was brilliant but it sounds very dated now and Mike Pattons voice is so squeaky. Whereas Angel Dust is timeless and still fills me with joy when I listen to it.

I agree with you Mart, Faith No More do not even compare to the Chillis - I cant stand them, the awful pretentious fools. Not that FNM arent pretentious mind you.

It was the bits you mention that made me think that. A plus point for Patton is that he doesn't go on about a "dubber-dibber" (whatever that may be) that seems to crop up a lot in Chilli Peppers songs...
