Just bought the above TV, and while we think its very magnificent, all we have done is literally plug it in and switch it on.

Is that it ? We feel as though after reading a few forums that othe people seem to be tweaking their TVs once they have bought them. If there anything of the tweaking variety that we should be doing, we just wouldn't know where to look ?

The picture seems great, sound is through the surround but are there any setup options that we should play with ?

Hey - if you're happy with the picture that's what really matters! I'm very pleased with my 32W4000.

Cinema mode with colour temperature set to Warm 2 seems to be the setting that is closest to the THX reference but some say that is a little dark for general purpose viewing but easy to brighten up a little. I tend to use Cinema + Warm 1 which I think gives a more natural skin tone.

Remember that settings are saved per input mode; so you have to adjust them for DVB and HDMI etc. separately.

They seem to advocate MPEG Noise Reduction: OFF, but I find it makes a noticeable difference to low bit-rate SD broadcasts. Its effect is most obvious on the scrolling strap-lines you get on news channels, I find it really cleans up the text well.

I must try that ......I do find the scrolling strap lines a bit annoying

I find my 32W4000 is better (in my opinion) without the noise reduction on or the MPEG reduction on. It can help but also can add a shimmery effect.

My settings are roughly: backlight 4, colour 54, brightness 55, contrast 58, sharpness 1 or 0, neutral colour temp, no advanced contrast settings or colour enhancements and I use the normal picture mode.

Lots of people say the HDTV.org settings are best but I thought they looked a bit nasty for my (fairly neutral) taste.

I've got the 26V4500 and I've found the secret is to turn the backlight down and compensate with the contrast.

I'm running with :

Backlight 2
Contrast 84
Brightness 50
Colour 56
Sharpness 5
Neutral

and all the other advanced stuff is off

Just got this set today as a replacement to a faulty Sharp 37" as was well worth the extra few bob.

The blacks on the Sony are so rich & deep compared to a bit of a haze on the Sharp. The colours are also more vivid.

One slight difference..

When checking the 'hidden' testcard on BBCi channel 105,
the colour blocks up, down, left & right of the main grey part of the card are hardly visable.

All of this was visable on the Sharp.

Is there anyway of altering this on any 'hidden' technical menu built in to the set.

I presume this means the cue dots visable before commercial breaks are not visable due to this.

Altering between zoom, 4'3 etc makes no real difference.

You can see it by altering the horzontal & vertical centreing but you lose the 'other' side of the picture that you are compensating for.

Not a major issue I grant you but I just wonder ifthis can be altered.

A relative of mine has a 40" Bravia viewing Freeview from a roof aerial. I have a 28" Bravia viewing Sky+ from a satellite dish.

My 28" Bravia gives me a picture that is detail perfect 24/7 however the image on my relative's 40" Bravia is far from ideal.

Their signal strength appears fine but the delivered screen image isn't. This is most noticeable when viewing the human face i.e. you cannot make out any detail on a person's face...it's as if wrinkles and frown lines had been rubbed out.

Any suggestions....I do wonder if this is down to the quality of the Freeview signal rather than the performance of the Bravia TV?

That sounds like the advanced picture options might be turned on, the noise reduction and mpeg noise reduction options, if turn on can smooth out detail to remove noise, but this can make faces look pasty and have a unnerving effect which makes faces almost have a surface that slithers...

I'd check that first.
