The original question is LCD or Plasma. Telling him Sony is the best doesn't tell him whether to get a Sony LCD or a Sony plasma (do Sony actually make plasma TVs)?

well the latest is that plasma TVs use a lot more energy...

Well that's not the latest but it has been in the news. Plasmas do you more power than LCD's but always as much more as you'd think. An efficient Plasma may use less than an inefficient LCD of the same size. If you compare sets of a similar quality they will use more. Panasonic are about to launch a new range of Plasma that reduce power consumption hugley compared with older models. http://panasonic.net/avc/viera/popup...ory/index.html
As far as which is better, thats for you to decide. I prefer the pictures on plasma sets for both Hd and Sd images, others prefer LCD. What you need to do is find some good independant dealers near you that are able to show you either type of set within your budget. Once you have done that go with the one you prefer form one of those dealers.

:/ well 'about to launch' is not the same as 'in the shops' ...

There are of course better LCDs always being launched, direct from the latest CES...
CES TV Trends: Thin, Local Dimming and 240Hz

quote:
"The LCD vs. Plasma debate basically boils down to this: LCDs have brighter whites and plasmas have deeper blacks (there’s also the glare issue but let’s ignore that for now). Given the lower cost of LCD panels at smaller, more mainstream sizes, TV makers are often looking for ways to improve black levels without sacrificing white levels."

It goes on to say that LED backlights will get the deeper blacks for LCD..

Best all round picture = PLASMA
Better Contrast
Better Colour
More Natural Picture
Better with SD (and HD)
Better Motion handling
Better Viewing angle (although new LCD's arent to bad)

Energy consumption wise theres not much in it. LCD are said to be more efficient.

Best LCD's Sony and Panasonic
Best Plasmas Panasonic and Pioneer

The set I was refering to are improved over the current ones. The current ones are still not always as bad as some people try to make out. Actual consumption and stated max power consumption are often very different on plasma sets, where as LCD's use fairly much the stated amount.
The news that plasma's use more power is not new! http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2...6-32730971_ITM

Spot on. Why couldn't I be that concise!

it depends what size screen you want

plasmas go up from a size
lcd goes up to a size

yes, good one... but LCD max size is increasing...

In the end it depends how much money you have, or patience for new developments!

probably best if the OP provided more info:

what sort of screen size
stand or wall-mount
what sort of use etc etc

The trouble is that most plasma owners say plasma is best and most LCD owners say LCD is best!

Both are good and bad I believe and it probably comes down to variable requirements.

I have a 32" Sony LCD and I believe it manages to give excellent SD and HD results without blurring or other typical LCD issues often complained about.

However, I'd agree that Plasma can give a warmer, less harsh image on some sources so it's really impossible to say what's right or wrong.

Interestingly LG have their 32" plasma model now out which I was surprised at, given that LCD is so dominant now.

I'd be grateful for some advise re plasma or lcd too please. So if size of the box is relevant I reckon I shall get a 40in tv - so... which is best then?

Well made the decision and bought a 32" LCD on a stand. Picture is brilliant, sound is awesome and comes complete with Freeview which is working on an old aerial which is about 30 years old!! I thought I would need an aerial upgrade, clearly I don't although the TV is also hooked up to a Sky Digibox. DVD playback is like being at the cinema.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

um, the freeview may be working but are you getting a good enough signal for the guideplus to work??

Why would you want Guide+ anyway? - which only some recent TV's seem to support for some bizarre reason?.

A good answer.

strangely enough, a lot want to use it.... I guess because it gives a 'sky+' look without the expense, and some basic digital guides look like they were designed 20 years ago(basic grey, fonts that look like sinclair spectrum...)

- you may be lucky enough to be able to use full sky+ with its 3 tuners, but some have evil landlords who (even if they let them use a sky dish) will only provide ONE cable, so cannot use sky+ fully!

- so they have to rely on DVB-T to record clashing programmes when they want to go out for the night, or record the match to see later with friends, and find another good programme to watch meanwhile...

Well Sky+ has only two tuners!

For which the standard Freeview EPG would be perfectly fine, no reason to rely on a third party EPG, which isn't likely to be as reliable, and requires over night downloads from an analogue terrestrial station.

Ooh!! and I thought this was going to be a Harry Hill thread.

When I was choosing between LCD and Plasma (a couple of years ago) I read in several places that Plasma screens may deteriorate in brightness and colour accuracy over time where LCD does not ?
Is that still the case, or was it never the case ?

I went for a Panasonic LCD..no regrets, it is still great.

Hmm.. I am sure I saw somewhere that you can record two and watch a third.. or was that a recording??? (still have not got one yet, dithering while the latest deal is clarified! )

usable yes, but I was referring to just the 'looks'..

The future of guideplus is in question due to it being not properly managed for a long time... It is aimed mainly at the totally 'non-tech' public, where pretty pics & colours attract them... and the companies prefer it as a reduction of support headaches, as well as a vehicle for ads!!

Surely you must have a mate somewhere that always has his recorder clock on 'flashing 00:00' and has no clue except 'press the red button' when he needs to? I've got a few like that, one's an economics professor!!
