Recording BBC on HDR Why not BBCi?
theShadowman
30-01-2009
Can anybody explain to me why the BBC allows us to record "Original Broadcast" programs on our PVRs, but we cannot record programs from BBCi on a DVD recorder. Apart from a Humax HDR I have a Virgin box and sometimes I would like to record a program from BBCi to watch at a later date, but it seems I cant. I would just like to know why.

Thanks

It is a known fact that The BBC are represented within this forum and even they have failed to respond Perhaps this posting may encourage them to come out of the woodwork this time unless they don't know either

Simple - RIGHTS - you can subject to the Copyright Act etc record a broadcast off air as you have been for years.

BUT the I Player Rights have the "it must expire by" restriction otherwise the rights holders would not allow it .... (or charge too much) - as it is NOT a broadcast.

Did you mean that BBCi cannot be recorded on just the HDR and the Virgin box? I can record BBCi on my DVD recorder from my Humax HDCI but would think any satellite receiver would be able to do this that can be tuned to the BBCi channels.

Soory ...... but a simlar answer BBC Interactive is NOT a channel and thus a mix of rights and also making it not a channel by making it not recordable.

BBCi does not have any events or an EPG entry so it is difficult to schedule recordings. However you might be able to pause MHEG content, you could even try the instant record button (but I can't remember if that was disabled).

Mostly the problem is that the PVR functions depend on a lot of broadcast data and the MHEG application takes control of the AV functions when it 'quiet tunes' to an interactive stream (part of the box still believes you are on the original channel). Because of this detachment it is difficult to design scenarios where recording can be reliable (it is also possible for an application to switch audio tracks independently of video).

I know there has been some discussions about how we (BBCi/Freesat/MHEG providers/receiver manufacturers) might help with this issue, but it is complex and ever changing (as MHEG application/implementation changes).

Hi Bob thanks for the input. It appears that the pause and record functions don't work as questioned in my link in post #2.

Hi Zetor yes I too can record to dvd from BBCi streams though I have never in the past needed to. My gripe is with the foxsat HDR not buffering or recording I can't understand why a recording can be made of a HiDef ITV red button stream but not a BBC Sd red button stream.

Humax own freeview 9200 can record BBCi streams no problem.

Morning Graham yes my freeview will record BBCi streams or at least it would have if there wasn't a clash with an existing schedule when I tried although on freeview the tuner actually retunes to say channel 103 weather this is an issue i don't know. I just get the impression reading between the lines of bob-cats post that the function has been disabled cos they're having trouble implementing it with the BBC though they can get it to work with ITV by changing channel (though due to the issuing of broadcast licenses itv's HD channel isn't a channel Hush hush wink wink )

You've lost me! All I want to do is record from BBCi to my DVD recorder. If I can do it will somebody please tell me how. When I try to record BBCi, all I get is a black screen. Some of you say you can record BBCi on your Humax. How can I do that if the "i" is not on freesat.

Confused

I am using a Humax HDCI 2000 and can manually tune all the BBCi channels which I can then record to my DVD recorder via scart, I have the Humax HDR but haven't tried using it in Freesat mode and so don't know if you can tune the BBCi channels, someone here will be able to say I'm sure.

Pretty sure you can't tune interactive streams as channels as you can't input all the required parameters. Similary you can't do the same with ITV HD either. Fta boxes have much better manual tuning capabilities.

I wonder if I am talking about the same subject as you more experienced people. I wanted to record a program from the BBCi PLAYER. Is it possible to record the player?

Sorry if I have confused the issue by asking the wrong question

BBCi and iPlayer are 2 separate items and iPlayer isn't available on the Humax HDR but I believe it could be possible in the future but whether you will be able to record it is another thing, looks unlikely.
