Very basic question about mini DVDs

Hi all,

I have a new camcorder (Canon DC311) that records on to mini DVDs. When recorded, can they be played back on computers and DVD players? The instruction manual seems to suggest they can if they're finalised but someone has told me laptops often can't play them. I haven't bought the DVDs yet so wanted to check this out before i waste any more money!

Also, for PC playback would Windows Media Player do the job or would i need to download something else?

Thanks in advance and sorry if it's a silly question

Why don't you test it out to answer all the questions you have?

I'm planning to return the camera if it doesn't do what i need, so i don't want to waste money buying DVDs if i'm not going to be able to use them.

Also the thought of working out how to use a camcorder fills me with horror, so i only want to do it once - when i've got the right one for the job!

Yes, you need to finalise the dvd in camera to get it to work in dvd players... not sure about compatibility with laptops, I'd assume if you had some dvd software in it it'd be fine. WMP generally works, if not then VLC media player would.

Ok, thanks - looks like i will have to bite the bullet and try it.

Mini DVD's are generally not compatible with slot loading drives, most laptops can take them

it's referring to physically taking the disk rather than being able to understand them. (once they're finalised)

you can tell by looking at the drive tray. see if it has an indentation in the form of an 8cm circle.

Yeah, most PC drives will take them, and any laptop drive where you place the disk over the mechanism that revolves the disk will play them.

The only kind of drive that won't is perhaps what the above poster meant re slot loading... the kind where the tray doesn't come out, a letterbox kind of drive.
