I have a Sony KDL-46W 4710 TV, which I am extremely pleased with. Picture quality is superb.

Except:

When I playback a recording made through the tv, Skybox and my Sony HDD recorder, the picture quality is sometimes awful.

There is a weird 'smudgy' effect particularly on faces in close up. The eyes (or nose or mouth) seem to move about the face as though they're not fixed to the same head!

It is so bad sometimes, that is practically unwatchable.

Can anybody explain what is happening, please?

Is there anything I can do about it?

Thanks for any help

David

Too much compression ?, can you select less on the Sony HDD recorder.

Thanks Chris.
I've just had a look into various menus on the HDD recorder, but I can't find anything specifically relating to 'compression'

It must be a setting, somewhere, I guess.

don't know about hdd recorders, but dvd recorders used to offer a number of differernt quality settings, which would be reflected in how much space the recording would take up.
and given that freeview and sky already have been compressed once doing it again is not a great idea. so need to look for a setting which uses up more MB / sec not less

Again not sure about your HDD recorder but suspect that its taking the analogue single in, processin that like a tv does then recording the video ( digitised).- so lots or processing

I use Freeview and whilst the signal is compressed, the PVR records the original digital stream so on playback this can be no worse than the normal freeview picture.

I understand that Sky+would work in a similar manner (waiting for someone to confirm)

Moving to this way or recording should improve things for you

Yes, it records the original digital data stream, so quality is the same as the broadcast - a true 'digital' recorder. An HDD recorder is actually an analogue recorder, it takes an analogue signal, converts it to digital and records that - this means you can choose various quality (or lack of) settings to squeeze more on the drive.

As long as you use a high quality setting, and record from an RGB source (like Freeview or Sky), results should be good. But it's essential to record in RGB, which means feeding it from the TV SCART on the source box.

Thank you Guys!

I had the scart leads a$$ about face! Doh!

I thought it was very odd because it used to record OK on the previous TV.

I'm just about to get an AV amp and surround sound speakers - I hate to think what I shall do to all those connections....

Thanks again
David.
