My panny 3yrs old requires a new panel, luckily i took out insurance, which i have never done before, and it runs out in march, it is being collected on tuesday, the tech said the panel would cost almost as much as a new tv, is he correct, if it is to be repaired would it be possible to have more hdmi sockets fitted, it only has one at the moment.

He's almost certainly right regarding the cost.

I'm a bit surprised that they're actually repairing it rather than just giving you a new TV - it'd be cheaper once you factor in labour costs.

You need to consider it's not 'under warranty' it's under 'insurance' - the repairer has to submit an estimate to the insurer, who then authorises the repair, or offers a 'write-off' value. Bear in mind, just like car insurance, if the set is written off, the insurance if then void.

Depending on the make and model, replacing the LCD (or Plasma) panel may exceed the original cost of the set - sometimes, it may exceed it greatly!. However, for some sets it may be a viable repair - Sony, for example, have dropped the prices for their replacement LCD panels massively over the last year or so.
