I'm hoping someone will be able to help here:
I have a lot of files(AVI, mpegs DVd etc) on my various hard drives- until now I've been laboriously burning these to DVD, with mixed success: some play Ok, some come up with 'no disc' after several minutes-Ialways use the same DVDrs, with nero??
Anyway, I just wondered is there some way to stream these to my telly? It would need to be a wireless solution, so I guess a homeplug network might be the way? What other bits of kit will I need?
Here's my set up:
Sony bravia HD; sky plus ;
sony DVD recorder(connected with HDMI);
and a Philips dvd/surround sound system.
My PC runs Vista Home premium on an Orange wireless connection
Here's hoping somebody can help?
cheers all

You might also consider an XBox, which lets you stream media directly from your PC, and lets you play games

On a related subject...

Having just reorganised our lounge, I now have a spare TV and a spare laptop with an S-Video TV-Out adapter (a Dell Inspiron 640m). It seems to me, I should be able to plug the laptop into the telly (which also has an S-Video adapter) and wirelessly display AVI files from the other PCs we have.

But, as usual, I'm confused by the array of adapter cables that are available. I think I need two cables, a straight-through S-Video=>S-Video plug-to-plug cable, plus a 3.5mm jack to phono pair (for the audio?).

Anyone advise on whether these items would be correct?

Or is there a neater, 1 cable, solution?

No, not really. You've got it right first time.

Even if you go VGA out to VGA in (if your TV has a VGA input), then you still need two cables - one for video, one for audio.

Although, of course, with two cables, you could send the audio to an amplifier, rather than to the telly.

Knowing the TV and laptop details might help us advise on alternative connection choices.

The Telly's a Panny Tx-32PS12.
The laptop's a Dell Inspiron 640m

I've had a closer look at the connectors. The TV SVideo one has 4 pins, but the laptop has 8? So I'm guessing that cable I picked out isn't right...

Check the laptop manual. That might be a PS2 connection for a mouse & keyboard.

It's got a TV-out "label" (a rectangle with "ears", with an arrow pointing out to the right)...

K

edit: Maybe it's only got 7 pins (plus 1 rectangular slot, which I thought was another pin!)

It is an S-Video out [click]. The 7 poles may mean that the socket also supports composite video - but I wouldn't bother with that, it's a relatively poor quality option.

Excellent piece of kit - I got it for £110 before xmas from play.com - you will find them on ebay for around £100
